Imagine helping your own blood because you thought family was supposed to look out for each other.
I had to travel, so instead of leaving my boss without a worker, I brought my younger brother to fill in for me temporarily. I personally opened the door for him.
Five months later, I come back expecting to resume my job, only to find out my own brother has settled comfortably into my position and has no intention of stepping aside.
The same brother I helped feed.
The same brother I gave an opportunity.
The same brother who wouldn’t have had this job if not for me.
Everyone keeps saying, “He was the one showing up to work.”
That’s not the point.
The point is loyalty.
If your own brother can watch you lose your position and decide to benefit from it instead of standing with you, then what exactly does family mean anymore?
Lesson learned: not everyone you help is grateful, and sometimes the people closest to you are the first to replace you.
I didn’t lose a job today.
I lost respect for someone I called my brother.
