The current political developments in and around Syria (violence) have an obviously stronger pull towards Salafism - Wahhabism than to the other intellectual traditions, it's only logical most would join this strain.

Quite the contrary, it's that the religious marketplace of Sham has always been contested, and the winners are usually decided by institutions, incentives, and state backing — not by who has the better argument. Us students of history don't mourn the churn. We map it. ♻️ ✍🏻 ⏳

And the kicker: today's trend isn't even some foreign import. The Damascene Salafiyya is over a century old.
al-Qasimi, Tahir al-Jaza'iri, al-Bitar — a reform circle in 1880s–1914 Damascus that revived Ibn Taymiyya (Jaza'iri literally used his perch at the Zahiriyya library to push his books) and seeded later figures like al-Albani.
