@fortnitebussy1 They'd been very very secretive about Chapter 5 in advance, even within those two weeks. I think it's natural for people to think that some serious shit is going to go down when you go out of your way to hide spoilers, even in the gameplay trailers.

@fortnitebussy1 People love to say "it was advertised as just being light-hearted fun!" when this was said like, two weeks before the chapter was even released. Meanwhile for the past year we had ominous prophecies about "trapped in asylum", "an inferno of jealousy" and "pink and gold".

I just don't get why everybody is suddenly acting as if Deltarune isn't extremely interested in the Mystery and Overarching Plot all of a sudden. Like, the narrative overnight pivoted to this being Fandom Kid Obsession and Not The Point. Even Chapter 5 is extremely into it

@fortnitebussy1 I've always hated fandom focus on "lore" over themes and characters and such, but come on. I don't think you can blame/make fun of people for coming up with theories when you actively make a cryptic ARG full of hints for the game 4 years in advance.

@fortnitebussy1 The Spamton Sweepstakes stuff. People pretending that FRIEND is fandom brainrot when that whole ARG was basically about FRIEND. It was teasing up to Chapter 5, so people naturally assumed it would be addressed by this chapter.

It kind of cheapens things just a little bit to me. It makes the game feel a bit less like a cohesive, timeless work of art that's been worked on for 15 years if content is constantly being changed/doubled down on based on fandom brainrot and playing into what they find funny.

It's mostly been kept to optional stuff, but it seems clear that stuff like having Gerson refer to Chapter 5 as The Field of Pink and Gold and the use of Mew Mew foreshadowing (and Mew Mew herself) is clearly informed by, and playing into, the FRIEND theories as a red herring

Genuinely I think my biggest issue with DELTARUNE is that the fact that the gaps between chapters means that fandom memes and speculation get referenced in the game itself, which started with Chapter 2 kind of cutely but feels like it's gotten more prevalent as time has gone on

So much feels like it's tailored for people to screenshot and post "SAY THAT AGAIN". I rolled my eyes every time they said "world revolving". That said, pretty much everything with Yellow trying to kill himself was fucking great. Definitely one of the funniest parts of the game.

I've always liked Toby's sense of humour but with this, referencing current memes and the fandom, it's honestly kind of gotten to a point where it's stopped being cute? does there really need to be a burger king foot lettuce reference in the weird route

Also with this in mind Im starting to think we’re just never gonna see asriel, like there is no college it doesnt exist and neither does he

after the weird route I’m fairly confident this is how home town works now, like in universe Nothing exist outside of it because it wouldn’t serve a purpose to the player

@Pantamonte Dess' room gave us something material to work with; we can infer so much about what she might have looked or acted like just from the room alone. It's great environmental storytelling, which feels cathartic even if we didn't see her actual design after years of buildup

@Pantamonte It doesn't even really elaborate or follow up on Chapter 4's cliffhanger! It's like being edged. I guess that's more of a problem with the game's release structure than the game itself, but waiting nearly 10 years for even just a hint towards what Asriel even looks like is crazy

@Pantamonte I've always kinda hated theorybait and the obsession with "lore" in fandoms. But even so I felt like there wasn't really any big questions that were answered, or many new things to speculate on. It kind of feels like we're still in the same place we were at the end of Chapter 4

@Pantamonte Yeah, I feel the same. I've always been one to think that maybe people are overthinking the relevance of certain things or expect the game to go in a certain direction, but also at the same time, with all the vague ARG/Sweepstakes stuff, I kind of don't blame them?
