In Washington, DC representing UMMC Cancer Center and Research Institute @UMMC_Cancer at the American Cancer Society @AmericanCancer Food Is Medicine Symposium! Did you know Mississippi has one of the highest rates of food insecurity in the nation with roughly 1 out of 5 residents facing hunger, including 1 in 4 children?! Excited to bring back valuable information, resources to improve healthcare for Mississippians in this nutrition space that it so vital to improve health outcomes! Connected with experts from National Institutes of Health (NIH), National Cancer Institute, Center for Medicare and Medicaid Services, Rockefeller Foundation, Food is Medicine Coalition, Harvard Law School Center for Health Law and Policy Innovation and more! We even heard from patients and providers which was very powerful. Love how they emphasized something we discuss a lot in self-advocacy! Everyone loved hearing about the great work we are already doing in Mississippi with our Lifestyle Medicine Clinic in our UMMC Bower School of Population Health @BowerSOPH where Dr Thomas Dobbs is our dean and Josie Bidwell, DNP is providing extraordinary services to include our Kitchen Rx cooking demonstrations! They loved hearing about our Survivor University thanks to Leslie Musshafen, PhD under the leadership of our forward thinking Director Dr Rod Rocconi @rodrocconi ! They were impressed to know our medical school @UMMCacademics curriculum has students getting at least 40 hours of nutrition education with our new culinary medicine program with Caroline Compretta, PhD! So many great things happening at University of Mississippi Medical Center @UMMCnews ! Excited about even more ahead as we expand research, address food insecurity, nutrition education, and more! Food IS medicine! Let’s go!!! #FIM #NutritionHealth #UMMC #HealthyMississippi #CancerCareInTheSip

Mississippi’s CRC burden is high, but it doesn’t have to stay that way. Get screened. Screening can finds polyps before they turn into cancer. Take a peek inside the Inflatable Colon, which is a great educational resource, video from Amy Ellis, ACS #CRCAwarenessMonth #CRCSM

The Alliance’s 2026 State of Screening Study reveals something we can’t ignore: too many Americans are missing critical information about colorectal cancer. Too many symptoms are being dismissed. While most people say they’re willing to talk openly about screening, major knowledge gaps and barriers still stand in the way of prevention. Colorectal cancer is highly preventable and often curable when caught early. We can save lives by starting conversations sooner, taking symptoms seriously, and making screening more accessible for everyone. Read the full findings 👉 bit.ly/2026-StateOfSc…
