@TheMSXChannel

I'm a retro game geek who loves Japanese video games especially. MSX computers, game preservation, and making maps for games are my passions.

I wonder what happened during the development of Rastan Saga for the MSX2. The box boasts about the game being on a 2M ROM cartridge, but over 600 tiles of graphics in it are actually unused. It also claims to have "a variety of new RPG elements", but the released game has none.

@dantemendes It would be so amazing to have this on MSX, but I don't think it would be possible. And the Sega CD game is brilliant.

Silpheed by Game Arts was originally released for the NEC PC-8801 in 1986. Shooter with polygon ships moving over a pre-calculated backdrop, it's a technical achievement pulling many visual effects and varied gameplay under the limits of an 8-bit processor. With a cult following, had sequels across generations. Perhaps more famously, the 1993 Sega CD title.

Back to the Future (MSX) is an official movie tie-in released in Japan by Pony Canyon in 1985. Marty McFly nonsensically run and jump over cops. Until George and Lorraine meet each other at the sidewalk. Cutting some slack, it was made by just one guy, Euro bedroom coder style.

A longplay of Rotors (1984, MSX): youtube.com/watch?v=pjHtFe… It's a fun little action-puzzle game for 1 or 2 players (simultaneous). Developed by Hibiki Godai (program/music), Satoshi Uesaka (title/characters), and Mariko Uemura (graphics). The previous game was called Pairs (MSX).

Ripped graphics from ASCII Corporation's MSX games, Pairs (1983) and Rotors (1984). Hibiki Godai of Thexder fame worked on these (programming+music), with graphics by Satoshi Uesaka (Pairs) and Mariko Uemura (Rotors).

I'm also fascinated by these fake screenshots used on most releases of Grog's Revenge. They're not of any of the released games. The game was released for the ColecoVision, MSX, and Commodore 64 (Amstrad CPC, Apple II, Atari 8-bit, BBC Micro, ZX Spectrum versions were cancelled).

Things that probably only I find interesting: The American ColecoVision release of Grog's Revenge is the only version that uses the "B.C.'s Quest for Tires II" name. The Canadian ColecoVision version and every other port is named "B.C. II: Grog's Revenge". I wonder why...

A longplay of Put Up (MSX, 1987): youtube.com/watch?v=0Xg07G… Developed by Yuichi Ago (吾郷裕一さん) and released on the 1987-10 issue of MSX Magazine. It's a cute little puzzle-platformer written entirely in MSX BASIC. I like how you're able to walk off a ledge and then jump. :)

Masanori Miyamoto, who used to compose music for many Compile games (Guardic, Aleste, Zanac, etc.), has uploaded something very interesting to YouTube -- the original source sketches he composed on a synthesizer, before they were converted to chiptunes! youtube.com/watch?v=3S_UI9…

This game somehow got an unofficial DOS version in 1991 by Sphinx Software, with 35 more stages. Apparently that version was widely spread around on pirated disk collections in Eastern Europe, and is way more known. In 2020, Raxiss remade the DOS game to the Oric Atmos computer.

There's this fun little MSX platformer from 1987 called Put Up, developed by Yuichi Ago (吾郷裕一さん) and released as a program listing on the 1987-10 issue of MSX Magazine. It only has 15 stages, but at least it's not overstaying its welcome.

This took me over a month to finish, but I love this game so much. Here's the complete maps to the PC-88/PC-98 action-RPG game The Story of Melroon, released by dB-Soft in 1989. mp83.file-hunter.com/Maps/The%20Sto… #StoryOfMelroon" target="_blank" rel="nofollow noopener">vgmaps.com/Atlas/PC-98/in…

The 1989-12 issue of MSX Magazine has a preview of Disc Station Special #4, showing this picture of Aleste Gaiden. It's not in the released game.

Today I learned that you can change the theme in Synth Saurus Ver.2.0 (MSX2) by holding the F1 or F2 key while selecting a module. My favorite is the H.R. Giger looking one.

😅 #MSX

@ES_DE_Frontend I miss half the features that ZNES had. I really loved using the Record State feature, playing it back, pausing and jumping in and playing from that point, that was amazing and you just can’t get that user friendly functionality out of modern emulators these days,

We always talk about retro games but where is the love for retro emulators? How many of you used any of these? Give yourself a point for each one and post your score.

@ES_DE_Frontend My first emulation experience came from playing NES games using NESticle. Also used ZSNES for the longest time. There was also one point in time when I emulated NES games on PS1 using It Might Be NES (funny name!).
