Your claim that Nigeria consumes the lowest electricity per capita is false @PeterObi. Latest data (2023) shows that 8 out of the 15 ECOWAS members have lower per capita consumption than we do (pink bars). We can call out our extremely poor situation without quoting FALSE data.

Tinubu in Jos Confirms ‘Don't Vote for Me’ Prediction on Power Supply During the 2023 campaign, President Tinubu made a clear electoral promise: “If I don’t give you constant electricity in four years, don’t vote for me for a second term.” When he took office in 2023, Nigeria had a power supply of over 4,000 megawatts and lower tariffs. Today, the electricity power supply is less than 4,000 megawatts on the average, and Nigerians are paying higher tariffs. Nigeria currently has the lowest per capita electricity consumption in the world, with a rate below 30% of the African average. Africa’s average is 617kwh, Nigeria’s is 144 kWh. This means that Nigerians consume least electricity than other Africans. In a glaring display of disregard for promises and a lack of trust, President Tinubu, during a brief airport stopover to visit grieving families of the Jos attack on Thursday, April 2, 2026, stated that one of the reasons for his 10-minute stay was that the airport had no electricity. “You have no light here I fly out in ten minutes” At a time when Nigerians are enduring days without power, our leaders cannot even stay a few minutes without it. Now is the time to stop incompetent leaders—those lacking the capacity and compassion—who prioritise their own comfort over the well-being of the people and make empty promises. A new Nigeria is POssible. -PO

FG INAUGURATES COMMITEE TO RESOLVE CHALLENGES OF GAS TO POWER The federal government has taken a step further to address the persistent challenge of gas supply to power generation plants with the inauguration of gas-to-power monitoring committee. A statement by the special Adviser on strategic communications and media relations to the Minister of Power, Bolaji Tunji notes that gas-fired plants, which account for about 80 percent of Nigeria’s electricity generation, continue to face setbacks due to supply disruptions, pipeline vandalism, mounting debts to gas producers, and weak coordination within the sector. Minister of Power, Adebayo Adelabu, describes the move as a decisive and strategic step to resolve a critical constraint in the Nigerian electricity supply industry. The committee is to monitor and drive the resolution of issues such as the repair of damaged gas pipelines, the settlement of outstanding debts to gas suppliers, and other operational barriers affecting gas availability to power plants. The Power Minister tasks members of the committee to provide actionable recommendations, particularly on mechanisms to guarantee payment for gas supplies and ensure sustainability.

Go and read oponu. The federal government has consistently adapted the Lagos model into national policy, most notably with the 2004 Pension Reform Act, which replaced the unsustainable "Defined Benefit" system with the Contributory Pension Scheme (CPS). This move mirrored the early success of Lagos in establishing a funded, private-sector-managed retirement framework through the National Pension Commission (PenCom). Other significant adoptions include the modernization of the Federal Inland Revenue Service (FIRS), which utilized the aggressive, digitized tax collection strategies pioneered by the Lagos State Internal Revenue Service. The creation of the Infrastructure Concession Regulatory Commission (ICRC) and the Security Trust Fund also scaled up Lagos-born models for public-private partnerships and collaborative security funding. Tinubu is not your father or Obi's mate; they can't even tie his shoelace...

Last week, I met Aliko Dangote at his refinery and fertilizer plant in Lagos. We discussed how @NSE_PLC and other African exchanges can support what could be Africa’s biggest IPO yet: a $22B offering to expand Dangote’s refinery business. African capital markets are backing African champions. The infrastructure is here. The ambition is here. Africa’s future isn’t being planned. It’s being built.

Yesterday, I signed a concession agreement on behalf of the Federal Government for the deployment of a contactless biometric passenger verification system, known as VPASS, across Nigeria’s domestic airports as part of efforts to strengthen aviation security, enhance data integrity, and improve revenue generation. This came after the necessary concurrence of the Infrastructure Concession Regulatory Commission (ICRC), the Attorney-General of the Federation and the approval of the Federal Executive Council. The initiative is designed to eliminate discrepancies in passenger data arising from inconsistent airline records, while also addressing unauthorized boarding practices. The system will ensure that all passengers on domestic flights are properly identified, thereby closing existing gaps that allow individuals to bypass Standard Identification Procedures.

Federal Ministry of Education
FEDERAL MINISTRY OF EDUCATION PRESS RELEASE 9 April 2026 FG LAUNCHES FIRST-EVER NATIONWIDE LEARNER IDENTIFICATION NUMBER TO TRANSFORM EDUCATION SYSTEM The Federal Government has launched the nationwide Learner Identification Number (LIN), a digital system assigning every student a permanent academic identity to support learning continuity, improve planning, and enable timely interventions. The Honourable Minister of Education, Maruf Tunji Alausa, described the initiative as a transformational milestone aligned with the Renewed Hope Agenda of Bola Ahmed Tinubu, focused on human capital development and technology-driven reforms. In the first phase, over 1.9 million candidates for the 2026 examinations conducted by West African Examinations Council and National Examinations Council have been issued LINs, strengthening education data management and examination integrity. The LIN enables seamless tracking of academic progression across all levels and is integrated with the Digitized National Education Management Information System (DNEMIS), which provides a national register of schools. By linking learners to verified identities, the system enhances examination security, reduces impersonation, and supports tracking of out-of-school children, dropouts, and learning gaps. The Ministry will expand the system nationwide across public and private schools and calls on stakeholders to support full implementation. The Federal Ministry of Education reaffirmed its commitment to building a transparent, inclusive, and data-driven education system. Boriowo Folasade Director, Press and Public Relations

Nigeria's Power Sector Financial Reforms: Setting the Facts Straight
Presidency Nigeria@NGRPresident

Nigeria’s Power Sector Financial Reforms: Setting the Facts Straight The Federal Government of Nigeria is implementing a structured and balanced reform programme to address longstanding financial challenges in the power sector. At the core of this effort is a market-based settlement mechanism designed to restore the sector, not reward accumulated claims that extend beyond verifiable service delivery. The objective is to ensure fairness to operators while also protecting the interest of the Nigerian public. Between 2015 and 2025, the sector accumulated approximately ₦4.7 trillion in claims across the electricity value chain. Following a Presidential stakeholder meeting in July 2025 where the claims of N4.7trillion were presented, a thorough review was recommended by President Bola Tinubu. On August 15, 2025, a ₦4 trillion fiscal cap was approved by the Federal Executive Council following which a comprehensive verification process was undertaken to verify claims. This resulted in a 30 percent reduction in claims, leading to a final negotiated settlement of ₦3.3 trillion, reflecting only valid and contract-backed obligations. To ensure sustainability and avoid fiscal pressure, the settlement is being implemented through a phased, market-based financing framework. •Total Series I Programme Size: approximately ₦1.23 trillion •Series I, Phase I (January 2026): ₦501 billion raised from the domestic capital market Disbursement is already underway: •₦223 billion has been disbursed to Generation Companies and gas suppliers •₦197 billion is in process, largely for gas-related obligations All disbursements are phased and conditional, based on verified claims, signed settlement agreements, and completed documentation. Implementation Progress •As at January 8, 2026: Five (5) Generation Companies covering fourteen (14) power plants had signed settlement agreements valued at approximately ₦827 billion •As at March 31, 2026: Eight (8) Generation Companies (2 public and 6 private), covering seventeen (17) power plants, have signed their settlement agreements valued at approximately ₦2.28 trillion This reflects growing alignment and participation across the sector. The financial settlement is also being implemented alongside broader reforms designed to strengthen the sector, including targeted support to ensure affordability for poor and vulnerable households, and tariff reforms aligning higher service bands with cost-reflective pricing to support investment and improve service delivery The programme is designed to restore liquidity, stabilise generation, improve reliability, and reposition the sector for long-term sustainability. It also reflects a shift from unverified claims to disciplined, transparent, and market-backed obligations. Note: This is not a one-off intervention but a structured effort to reset the financial and operational foundations of Nigeria’s power sector. The Federal Government remains committed to ensuring that the reforms deliver a stable, reliable, and investable electricity market for the benefit of all Nigerians.
