Internal politics is this thing that I never wanted to do and assumed with software engineering I'll avoid it. Little did I know that irrelevant of the field, given enough people, (in)efficient communication & the difficulty of influencing others appears. Welcome to politics...

You are not Steve Jobs. Neither am I, or anybody else. Using Steve as a model for product development is a futile exercise—he was unique. Maybe Steve knew more about what the customer wanted than they did, but I sure don't. I need to talk to them, trust what they say, & iterate.

@AllanCudicio Individuals have the ability to be neutral. Leaders do not. They are either helping move us all forward or they are not. Being upset with and calling out leaders who do not move us all forward is correct and leads to better outcomes for everyone.

@TestPappy Truly one of the most underused tactics in all of consulting is asking the team to describe their system/workflow/dataflow etc. I'm always amazed at how far a team gets without a shared understanding of what they are actually doing / working on!

I started trying this in 2013. I had two testers on my team who had no clue about system thinking. Not even the foggiest. I tried to explain things to them, and all I got was nodding, but no understanding. Then I asked them to draw for me how they think the system looked like.

What I say: I'm a Quality Coach. What people hear: I'm here to own all the manual/automated/gui testing and nothing else! What I actually mean: We own the quality culture. I'm here to help us nurture it.
