@shanselman Languages often involve competition. Languages are often associated with cultures and communities. Just as English Kings used to speak French, but then when tensions tightened English came to dominate, you can see similar forces at work with programming languages.

epic question I just got, what are your thoughts on how to answer in 60s - "How are programming languages actually made? Why are there so many?" I have some ideas on how to approach this, do you?

@davidjustodavid @shanselman Ok but why we have so many for the same purpose?

@shanselman Why so many? PLs make design trade-offs. Some are good for web, some are good for stats, etc. Those that are "ok" at everything do not exceed at any particular domain.

@svknyc @shanselman And we all use English as common one to communicate. Shouldn’t be a programming language like English?

@shanselman I think it’s the same reason with human languages.

@shanselman Actually the second question is the main question of my PhD research. Along with questions like “is this plethora of programming languages and frameworks helping making progress? What’s the effect on programming and programmers?” I think part of the answer is competition

@shanselman That’s really strange. In Greece in person meetups are still banned and probably this will be the case for a long time.

I appreciate that it’s a new year, but I’ve gotten three emails just today with folks asking me to visit their user groups or companies in person. I don’t know about you, but I don’t see myself going anywhere till at least July. Am I wrong here?
