@mkguliford Been there. Done that. Well, not Hoisington per se, but not far away. When I was back for a reunion a few years ago, the gap between those who had moved on and those who’d never left their home town was remarkable. Even moving to another small Kansas town made a difference.

30 years later, we look back with horror on the unthinkable violence, with sadness over those lost, and with admiration for survivors who have managed to rebuild their lives. At a time when commitment to human rights is in decline, Rwanda reminds us of the need to act.

Having returned from Rwanda 11 months before, I struggled to get news of friends. It wasn’t until I returned to Rwanda a year later that I learned details of those who survived but lost their families and others killed, sometimes by people I knew.

30 years ago today, I heard of the president of Rwanda’s death. Soon reports of violence trickled in. Within a week, it was obvious that a genocide was under way against Rwanda’s Tutsi minority.

@Timlongman I started teaching an African Politics course 2 years ago with @MCollord, happy to send our syllabus over as it's fairly up to date. Recommend @thecontinent_ as a tool to get students to engage with what's happening in real time.

@BrLawrenceLC @HomeDepot And they only give you 48 hours after delivery to make a claim if it's damaged or doesn't work - but of course it's still in the packaging and not hooked up, so who knows?

Bought a washing machine @homedepot. Delivery yesterday came 8 hours after the window, w/o explanation. The drivers dropped off but didn't install it, because they didn't have the hoses. We called this morning to reschedule, which won't happen until THURSDAY! Terrible service!

@Timlongman She worked there for about a decade and was working there when we met, but she hasn’t been with them for the past dozen years, so few contacts with current Cirque folks.

FWIW, met my partner of 16 years online & we both acknowledge that we would never have met IRL (me: anglophone academic; her: francophone working @ Cirque du Soleil) but being with her has expanded my life way beyond the narrow confines of academia, so there are upsides.
