Pelosi: Trump threatening to leave NATO = giving a huge gift to Putin. And the law supposedly forbids the President from withdrawing unilaterally.
Reality:
• Many European countries have chronically failed to meet the 2% GDP defense spending target, happily relying on American protection while refusing to pay their fair share.
• Trump’s “threats” have actually forced Europe to increase military spending in recent years — that’s just a fact.
• The 2023 law restricting unilateral withdrawal was rammed through by Democrats and some Republicans specifically to tie Trump’s hands. Constitutionally, the President has core authority over foreign affairs and treaties. Whether Congress can bind the President like this will likely end up before the Supreme Court.
Labeling any reasonable questioning of the alliance’s fairness as “shortsighted” or “pro-Putin” is the real political manipulation here.
Is NATO supposed to serve American interests, or must America unconditionally foot the bill for Europe forever?
👍 Like if you support reevaluating NATO and making Europe shoulder more responsibility.
