I had the honour of representing the Republic of Uganda at the High-Level Event commemorating the International Day to Combat Islamophobia, held on 16 March 2026 at the United Nations General Assembly Hall in New York.
During the meeting, I reaffirmed Uganda’s firm commitment to combating all forms of religious intolerance and discrimination. I highlighted the growing concern of Islamophobia globally, which continues to manifest through hate speech, stigmatization, discrimination and acts of violence against Muslim communities, often amplified by misinformation and digital platforms.
I called for strengthened international cooperation, including the development of robust legal and policy frameworks to prevent discrimination based on religion or belief, improved mechanisms for reporting and addressing hate crimes, and greater investment in education to promote mutual respect, tolerance and intercultural dialogue.
I also underscored Uganda’s long-standing tradition of religious tolerance and cultural diversity. Guided by our Constitution, which guarantees freedom of worship, Uganda continues to promote interfaith dialogue, peaceful coexistence and unity within diversity as a foundation for social cohesion, peace and stability.
The meeting brought together leaders and representatives from across the world, all expressing concern over the rise in religious intolerance. We collectively reaffirmed our shared responsibility to uphold human dignity, equality and the right of every individual to freely practice their religion.
Uganda remains committed to working with the international community to advance inclusive, peaceful and respectful societies for all.
