Julius Rosenberg is one of the most consequential traitors in American history. Born in New York in 1918, he became a committed communist in college as many Jews do, where he met Ethel and joined a circle of young radicals who believed their loyalty belonged to the Soviet Union, not the country that raised them. He trained as an electrical engineer and took a job with the US Army Signal Corps during World War II, a position that handed him access to sensitive military technology. He used it. By the early 1940s he was recruited by Soviet intelligence and given the codename "Liberal," and he didn't just spy himself, he built and ran an entire network, recruiting friends and contacts to feed Moscow a steady stream of American secrets: radar, jet propulsion, weapons design, and eventually the crown jewel, the atomic bomb. His way in to the Manhattan Project was his own family. Ethel's younger brother, David Greenglass, was a machinist stationed at Los Alamos, the top-secret lab building the bomb. Julius leaned on him to hand over sketches and descriptions of the weapon's design, which were passed up the chain to Soviet handlers through couriers like Harry Gold. The FBI later recovered the cut half of a Jell-O box that the spies had used as a recognition signal, a chilling little detail showing how casually these men trafficked in their country's most guarded secret. The damage was real: when the USSR detonated its first atomic bomb in 1949, years ahead of what American scientists expected, the espionage Julius helped run had shaved critical time off Stalin's path to the weapon that would hold the world hostage for the next half century. The whole thing unraveled like dominoes. British physicist Klaus Fuchs confessed to leaking bomb data, which led investigators to Harry Gold, which led to David Greenglass, who cracked under questioning and named Julius. In 1950 Julius was arrested. He had every chance to cooperate, to confess and name his handlers and the rest of his network, and the government made clear it wanted those names. He refused. He stayed loyal to Moscow to the very end, choosing the cause over his country and even over his own two young sons, whom he was knowingly orphaning. Decades later, the declassified Venona project, decrypted Soviet cables, confirmed everything: Julius Rosenberg was exactly the spy the government said he was, "Liberal," the ringleader who sold out the United States to its deadliest enemy. In 1951 he was convicted of conspiracy to commit espionage. Judge Irving Kaufman told the courtroom the crime was "worse than murder," charging that by handing Stalin the bomb he had altered the course of history and put millions of his countrymen at risk. On June 19, 1953, after Eisenhower twice refused clemency, Julius Rosenberg was strapped into the electric chair at Sing Sing and executed. He went to his death without giving up a single name, a traitor to the last. He remains, with his wife, the only US civilian ever executed for espionage during the Cold War, and his name still stands as the definition of betrayal: a man who took everything his country gave him and handed it to the enemy.

He was the only signer in the entire room who wrote down where he lived, and he did it on purpose, so that if the British wanted to come hang the traitor, they would know exactly which door to knock on. That is who Charles Carroll of Carrollton was. Here is what makes the moment even sharper. He was not a man with little to lose. He was the single wealthiest man in the thirteen colonies and the largest private landowner among them. While George Washington and John Hancock get talked about as rich men, it was Carroll who topped them all. When he signed, he was wagering the biggest personal fortune in America against a noose. And he was the last man anyone would have expected to be there at all. Carroll was Catholic. In colonial Maryland, a colony founded as a Catholic refuge that had since turned on its own, Catholics could not vote. They could not hold public office. They could not worship in public. The most educated, wealthiest man in America was, in the eyes of the law, a second-class subject barred from the very government he was helping to create. He had spent seventeen years being educated by Jesuits in France and spoke five languages fluently, and back home he still could not legally cast a ballot. So he became the only Catholic to sign the Declaration of Independence, putting his name on a revolution that he hoped would build a country with room for men like him. That was its own enormous bet, made by a man the existing system had already shut out. Then he simply outlived everyone. Thomas Jefferson and John Adams both died on the same astonishing day, July 4, 1826, exactly fifty years after the Declaration. When they were gone, Charles Carroll of Carrollton was the last living signer left on earth. For six more years he was the final human link to that room in Philadelphia, the last hand that had signed, a living relic of the founding that ordinary Americans traveled to see and shake. He finally died in November 1832 at the age of ninety-five, fifty-six years after he wrote his address on a treason document and dared the empire to come find him. The richest man in America. The only Catholic. The last one standing. He had more to lose than any of them, every legal reason to stay quiet, and he signed his full address anyway. We remember the names we were handed in school. We forget the man who made sure his couldn't be mistaken for anyone else's. Which Founding Father do you think history shortchanged the most?

The devastating consequences of Russia’s military production continue to be felt daily by the people of Ukraine. Over the past week alone, the Russian Federation has launched more than 2,900 attack drones, nearly 1,560 guided aerial bombs, and more than 150 missiles of various types against Ukrainian cities and communities. Every activity may contribute to sustaining Russia’s industrial and military capacity warrants careful examination. The Embassy takes note of the ongoing investigation being conducted by the relevant Irish authorities and welcomes the Irish Government’s commitment to establishing all relevant facts. We look forward to the timely conclusion of this process and to any measures deemed necessary on the basis of its findings. Ukraine fully recognises the importance of protecting jobs, communities, and industrial competitiveness in Ireland and across the European Union.
