@greg_ashman NAPLAN was only ever designed for accurate measurement at the school level - not at individual student level. (This may have changed with the adaptive online test which allow testing across a much wider range of bands) 2/2

@greg_ashman Devil's Advocate : was it ever that accurate? Margin of error across two tests was, I believe, close to a whole band. Certainly for high band Year 7 students the could easily score off the scale in Year 7 but not in Year 9, giving the impression they were going backwards. 1/2

@mikesalter74 I always think of "Dear Leader" when someone uses that very N Korean sounding term - fancy thinking you "lead" the thoughts of society!

My Gawd the term “thought leader” is laughable. How anyone can say it with a straight face, let alone *describe themselves* as such, is beyond me.

@nathanday314 Nice mix. Will be very useful - thank you! Could I suggest rotating and reflecting some of the triangles so the hypotenuse isn't always in the same location?

@AshaRaoRMIT Remember there is a real tension at the root of the disciplines : science is based on empiricism (experiment, induction) while maths is based on reasoning. And in practice, most STEM activities and courses seem to be very heavy on the "maker" approach of T and E. It's an issue.

@DavidKButlerUoA Everything comes down to those little rectangles f(x) by dx. That's why it's so important for teaching and learning to emphasise the dx is something real - not an artefact of the notation. Infinitesimal approach to calculus FTW! See 1910 "Calculus made easy" 😁

The point here is that when you compare ∫f(x)dx for a continuous distribution to Σp(x) for a discrete distribution, the ∫ matches to the Σ and the whole of f(x)dx matches to the p(x) (as opposed to the f(x) matching to the p(x) and the ∫…dx matching to the Σ).

After all this time I have finally realised that in a continuous probability distribution with density f(x), when you do ∫f(x)dx, the “f(x)dx” is the probability that goes with a little bit of the x-axis that is dx wide, and you’re adding up all those bits of probability.

@saravdwerf Lots of great suggestions, but I’d like to put in a strong vote for Paul Lockhart’s Arithmetic. It’s so well-written and explains foundational math content to a depth that we all should have but that few actually do. It should be read by everyone who teaches math.

@mikesalter74 It makes travel in Japan an absolute joy. And gives you confidence to really go off the main tourist routes too.

One thing that has really struck me after only two days in Japan: politeness breeds politeness. The impeccable manners of the locals here induce even Australian and American tourists to behave with respect. It’s been instructive to observe.

Challenge: prove that the blue path and the red path have equal lengths. No spoilers, please! Instead, share thoughts on useful hints to help students with this problem. #hintchat Huge thanks and hat tip to @DavidKButlerUoA for this problem! #iteachmath #mtbos

@PepsMccrea .. backed by a well written teaching program which points at maybe 5 high quality digital resources per topic, and a faculty collated set of resources.

@PepsMccrea Whatever happened to a really well designed textbook....? They do still exist, although it can be hard work to find them.

Report arguing for greater focus on resourcing teachers with high quality curriculum materials. → Based on surveys of 7,000+ Australian teachers → Find that much time is wasted by teachers planning alone & scouring the internet

@MrHonner @QuantaMagazine Thanks so much for your articles, accessible with "only" (mostly) high school maths. They make terrific reading to inspire students who want to more. And Quanta is the perfect vehicle because so many of those students are also interested in quantum physics and astrophysics.
