Beijing October 2005 near the Zhongnanhai leadership compound in Beijing. Taken from a taxi. One of my best photos. The composition turned out well by accident! I'm more of a snapshotist than a photographer.

Very emotional moment from the interview with Zelenskyy. You should watch this. JOURNALIST: Do you miss being an actor? ZELENSKYY:?I miss being a good father. JOURNALIST: When your children were little, what did you tell them the most? What was the thing that you told them the most when they were small? ZELENSKYY: I love you. JOURNALIST: And what do you tell them now that they're older? ZELENSKYY: Oh, I miss you. JOURNALIST: When was the last time you cried? ZELENSKYY: I will try to do it after our interview. No, I mean this, between us. I'm a normal man and then there are a lot of different moments, between us, almost each day, a lot of losses on the battlefield and civilians, and there are absolutely crazy attacks on our people. And I'm just, it's… I mean, It's very difficult really, when I give orders (medals). I said about it. It's always difficult for me when I give orders (medals) to the mothers and fathers, who lost their children. In such moments, really, I often cry. JOURNALIST: Are you a hero? ZELENSKYY: No. JOURNALIST: So who is your hero? ZELENSKYY:?My hero? My children, my army, our army, and Ukrainian people. So I'm a part… I'm also a Ukrainian, so I'm a part of our nation. But now our nation, I think, that our nation is absolutely heroic.

I told CNN’s Audie Cornish that the most important part of JD Vance’s book about his conversion to Catholicism was what wasn’t in it. In his first week in office, Vance accused Catholic bishops of profiting from migrant resettlement and lectured clergy on the teachings of St. Augustine. It led Pope Francis to rebuke him in a letter to American bishops — a letter ghostwritten by Robert Prevost, the future Pope Leo XIV. The Church loves its converts. But a convert who walks in lecturing everyone on how they’re doing it wrong — and gets rebuked by two popes in a single year — is pushing his luck.

Beijing weaponized Kenyan immigration officials to arbitrarily lock up an invited Taiwanese scholar for 20 hours right before a major international ocean summit. During preparations for the 11th Our Ocean Conference in Mombasa, Kenyan authorities confiscated the academic's passport and phone under intense political pressure from China. The hostility escalated when Kenyan officials blocked Taiwanese IP addresses and abruptly revoked travel visas for the arriving scientists. Citing severe safety concerns, Taiwan’s Ocean Affairs Council, the government agency managing maritime policy, was forced to completely withdraw its entire delegation from the global environmental forum. This cross-border targeting exposes how the Chinese Communist Party exploits its predatory Belt and Road infrastructure loans to turn debt-ridden nations into diplomatic enforcers. By weaponizing financial leverage, the regime is successfully forcing foreign governments to sabotage international scientific cooperation and systematically isolate Taiwan. #Taiwan #Kenya #CCPTransnationalRepression #BeltAndRoad #OurOceanConference #Geopolitics

The remarkable story of Chinese scientist Tu Youyou, who won the 2015 Nobel Prize in Physiology or Medicine for her discovery of artemisinin — a breakthrough drug that has saved millions of lives from malaria worldwide. In the late 1960s and early 1970s, amid China's "Project 523" (a secret effort to combat malaria during the Vietnam War era), Tu Youyou and her team reviewed thousands of ancient Chinese medical texts for herbal remedies against "intermittent fevers" (a classic description of malaria symptoms). Most preparations involved boiling herbs into decoctions, but one key reference from the Eastern Jin Dynasty (around 340 AD) stood out — Ge Hong's A Handbook of Prescriptions for Emergencies (肘后备急方). It described using qinghao (sweet wormwood, Artemisia annua) by taking "a handful of qinghao, immerse in two liters of water, wring out the juice, and drink it all." Notably, this method used cold water steeping and wringing (squeezing) rather than heat. This detail was pivotal: Traditional boiling methods had yielded inconsistent or ineffective results in modern tests because high temperatures degraded the active compound. Tu hypothesized that heat was destroying the antimalarial potency, so her team shifted to low-temperature extraction techniques. In September 1971, they experimented with solvents like ethyl ether (which has a low boiling point of about 35°C) to extract the leaves and stems at reduced temperatures. On October 4, 1971, they obtained a highly effective sample (#191) that achieved 100% inhibition of malaria parasites in rodent and monkey models. This led to the isolation of artemisinin (also called qinghaosu) in 1972. Tu even tested the safety of early extracts on herself first. Artemisinin-based combination therapies (ACTs) are now the WHO-recommended first-line treatment for malaria, dramatically reducing deaths, especially in Africa and Asia.

@Handre Sartre wrote 'Childhood of a Leader' analysis of the psychology of fascism and opposed Nazi fascism. Surprising he could not see fascism in Mao's 'people's China'. One of my Chinese friends told me, referring to Mao. "We Chinese know what fascism is" chatgpt.com/share/6a31631b…

In 1968, while teenage Red Guards beat their professors to death with clubs in Beijing courtyards, Jean-Paul Sartre sat in Paris calling Mao's Cultural Revolution a model of revolutionary democracy. The most celebrated intellectual in France looked at a country burning its own libraries and saw liberation. He sold the Maoist newspaper La Cause du Peuple on French street corners himself, holding it aloft like a sacrament. Consider what he was endorsing. Between 1966 and 1976, the Cultural Revolution killed somewhere between 500,000 and two million people. Schools shut down across the entire country. Students dragged teachers onto stages, hung placards around their necks, forced them to kneel on broken glass, then murdered them. The historian Bian Zhongyun, vice-principal of a girls' school in Beijing, died on August 5, 1966, beaten by her own students with nail-studded clubs. Sartre called this the people governing themselves. You should understand why a man this intelligent got it this wrong. Sartre believed knowledge served power, that truth was whatever the revolution required, that the individual existed to be dissolved into the collective will. So when Mao abolished the distinction between teacher and student, between expert and mob, Sartre cheered. He had spent decades arguing that bourgeois reason was a class weapon. Here was a regime taking him at his word and clubbing the reasoners to death. This is what economic illiteracy buys you. A university, a price, a contract, and a peasant's grain stockpile all carry knowledge that no central planner can seize or replicate. Mises explained the calculation problem in 1920. Hayek explained dispersed knowledge in 1945. Sartre had access to both and chose the dunce cap of the collective instead, then handed out its propaganda on the Rue de Rennes. He died in 1980, mourned by 50,000 followers, never having retracted a word about Mao. The professors of Beijing got no such funeral. They got a ditch, and a philosopher in Paris explaining that their murder was freedom.

For decades, the story of Mao's rise was wrapped in myth. Historian Frank Dikötter argues the reality was far darker: a marginal movement, Soviet backing, civil war, and a regime built on political paranoia. Watch a new episode of @UncKnowledge with @P_M_Robinson on X:

Authorities in southwestern China launched a large-scale raid against Early Rain Covenant Church (ERCC) during its Sunday worship service on June 14, detaining dozens of believers, according to reports received by ChinaAid and a subsequent church statement. The church’s worship service, which included families and children, was being held in a hotel conference room in Jiangyou City, about 100 miles northeast of Chengdu, when it was raided at approximately 11 a.m. local time. According to a statement released by ERCC leaders, 60 to 70 government personnel — including police officers, SWAT personnel, Domestic Security Protection Unit officers, religious affairs officials, and local government representatives — “stormed the venue and forcibly took control of the gathering.” Church leaders said 33 believers were detained during the operation, including two elders, Yan Hong and Wu Wuqing. Your reminder that China is intentionally sustaining a war which is killing innocents, ravaging our continent, and has been given a free pass for it. Extraordinary how Beijing keeps telling us who they are, and we keep pretending not to hear.
