@mbird12 A high school friend of mine (we're from Texas) went to Yale, and had a friend from Long Island NY, which has a similar kind of accent (Lorn Gyland). That friend vividly remembered talking back to a teacher in grade school, saying "Whaddya mean, dorg doesn't rhyme with lahg!"

Nothing but respect to politicians in … Louisiana?!?! I mean … I live in Texas, so I can’t throw too many stones, but in terms of political corruption Louisiana has a longer, richer tradition than almost any state.
Peter Burns@PeterBurnsESPN

I say this as a proud Louisianian & with nothing but respect to the politicians in the state. Please say as little about the LSU coaching search as possible Nothing positive for the entire state comes with turning this coaching search into a public spectacle for personal gain

@CoachTuck_ @Aaron_Torres Right, exactly. A lot of them entered the portal immediately when Jimbo was fired, but a few stayed and bought into Elko's system and are thriving. This week's "The Pulse" video from A&M athletics highlights a couple of those guys: youtu.be/RPvCVK71HYw?si…

@glv @Aaron_Torres Gotcha, was curious how those dudes would shake out. #1 classes doesn't mean they'll come in and dominate right away, ya know? Takes time to bake.

The real MVP of the Texas A&M season: The fans, for refusing to let the administration hire Mark Stoops over Mike Elko. Never forget, that almost happened. And the fans said no. Good for them. They're now in the midst of the best season in a generation - with PLENTY more ahead

@BrianGoetz Ever since I first saw these stickers a few years ago, I’ve fought the urge to buy them and carry a few in my wallet. I would slap them over the speakers on gas pumps, self-checkout stands, and a bunch of other things.

ObGrumpyOldMan: I am so tired of being "congratulated" by machines for trivial things like submitting a form, or being told "nice choice" for putting something in my shopping cart. (Does anyone get told "rookie move, bozo" for buying dumb stuff? I'd be less grumpy if they did.)

@glv (Caveats, of course, that “correctness” and “performance” are also contextual.) Also, the reason I offered it in an echo of the Jesus-intensifies-a-command idiom was because of how the form works—not undermining the original statement, but saying “there is more to do.” (2/2)

I built a little Rust-powered CLI tool back in early June that I use all the time now, which I hope to open source in the next week or two, called count-md. It’s like `wc`, but it’s Markdown-, HTML-, and Unicode-aware, so it can accurately count the *words* in a Markdown text.

@chriskrycho Oh, sure. The same with "premature optimization is the root of all evil in programming." People frequently take "premature" to mean "before you're finished." But it actually means "before you measure." The difference is huge.

@glv Right, and to be clear I agree with both you here and the original formulation as offered! But I keep seeing the phrase batted around in a way that actually treats “correctness” and “performance” as *optional*, which (and I know you agree!) they actually are not. (1/2)

@chriskrycho then cleaning up internal structure to reflect newly gained understanding, followed by an optimization pass, is an excellent strategy. That doesn't mean you can't choose an efficient implementation technology to begin with, or follow good design principles from day 1. 2/2

@chriskrycho Yep, for sure, and I agree with you about performance being essential. But I think your other tweet, by imposing a different meaning of "work" and "right" than the original formulation intended, weakens a useful rule of thumb. Focusing on functional correctness first, 1/

Okay, that was yesterday, this is today. x.com/chriskrycho/st… This little tool is, after 20 minutes of work this morning, 1.73× faster than it was last night. How? #Rust’s Rayon library makes it 🍰 to go multithreaded for this kind of trivially parallel work!
Chris Krycho@chriskrycho

Here’s my favorite part, besides just how nice it is to have the tool, given I have reasons for wanting all that functionality in its own right: Running it on my website, with its 280,687 words, and a lot of complicated Markdown, finishes about 4× faster than `node --help`. 🚀

Moments before the service this morning a man in the pew behind me said “I’m so excited to learn from you, but I’m really excited to have my daughter watch you teach me.” Sir you cannot say things like that right before I teach the Bible, I will surely lose it up there

@sewistwrites A few years back I took stock of all the Hugo winning novels I’d read, and I realized that I had read many by male authors and very few by women. So I started prioritizing correcting that. (And that led me to other great female writers and I’m thoroughly enjoying them.)

Wow. What a wacky sequence. But it all shakes out that the Cowboys will get the win. 20-19, as the Lions fail to convert the 2PC. Cowboys escape, but not without a serious set of heart palpitations for their fans.
