Every time I sit down to breastfeed, my son hovers around looking bored. It's so tempting to hand him a screen. But I've learned that if I resist, within a few minutes his imagination turns on. He picks up a stick and teaches himself how far he can throw it. He finds bugs outside and decides which ones are "poisonous." He pulls his sister into some imaginary game only they understand. That's what boredom does. It forces the brain to create something from nothing. When people are bored, their creative output actually goes up. The brain starts generating instead of consuming. This is how the prefrontal cortex develops. Not from soccer at 4 and piano lessons at 5, but from unstructured time where a kid has to figure out what to do with themselves. As parents, we all have moments where we want to hand over the iPad because we're overstimulated. But you're trading 10 minutes of peace for something they actually need: The ability to sit with nothing and make something out of it. It's worth asking what happens when a generation never learns to sit with discomfort because of all the disposable entertainment readily available to them.
