Congratulations to @niritsch on a fantastic job defending (and finalizing!) his dissertation, "Enriching Block-based End-user Programming with Visual Features." I think can I speak for @reid_holmes and @davidcshepherd and say we're all proud of what you've done!

@rg9119 Thank you Ron! I think the mix of the three different styles not only led to lots of shenanigans, but also really great supervision!

Also, most impressive how many shenanigans you withstood from the three of us combined over the years. Boy did you earn that red stapler! 😄

@ionathanch Meanwhile UBC is still stuck in the “Are grad students even workers? Can you really call whatever our grad students do ‘work’? Maybe it’s best for everyone if we just silently think about this for another 5-10 years before coming to any conclusions.” phase.

🤖 What do you think? Could you program a two-armed robot? Will robots take over the world?!🤖 I just published "Can Novices Program Two-Armed Robots?" link.medium.com/mKn5QbAkUCb

@ionathanch That can’t be the only way. What if your battery dies? What if you don’t have service for some random reason? I seriously hope that this is just some last resort option so they don’t have to deal with locked-out people at night who forgot their keys.

@ionathanch By the time they switch to version 5 unicode hopefully has a “number 5 lying on its side” character that can substitute for the n.

@VeredShwartz @peterjansen_ai @riaqn_zh Note that in both cases you will get several months of notice and one month of rent for free. You could also get a full year worth of rent reimbursed if it turns out any of this happened in bad faith (e.g. the landlord doesn’t actually move in or doesn’t renovate).

My landlord and I are exchanging ChatGPT-generated emails negotiating the rent increase. I wish we could just let ChatGPT negotiate with itself and report the decision to us.

@tomaspetricek @programmingconf Is there a reason why you chose to re-use the name "Secondary Notation" from the cognitive dims with a new definition? I think they are nicely complementing each other, but it seems unfortunate that all future work that wants to use both will run into this name collision.

@ionathanch I meant Rosbacher (with one s). The other one seems to be an Austrian liqueur.

@ionathanch Lol Gerolsteiner is one of the most basic name-brand waters you could get in Germany. Not bad, but really not worth going out of your way to find in the US. If they have other German waters, Rossbacher is among the saltiest/highest mineral content.

@rg9119 @samth The bigger picture seems to be that Germany has no equivalent to tenure-track, and a far smaller fraction of tenured professorships are well. Part of it might also be that Germany has “habilitation” as another step between obtaining a PhD and being able to become a professor.

@samth what's this showing? (I have a vague idea, but repeat visits to google translate aren't helping)

@rg9119 @samth The red dashed line seems to be tenure. I don’t think that the same color/texture always represents equivalent positions. For example, all of the German “middle class” boxes are some form of non-tenure-track researcher, the only difference is the level of job security.
