Infrastructure yea. Human capital is not improved by letting people live on the public dime. Human capital is improved by allowing them maximum opportunity. Founding of dederal dept of education was followed by an absolute rotting out of the public school system. More govt can and does make things work. Where i live, education is paid for with state and property taxes. We pay for the electrical grid with our utility bills, same for water, roads are property taxes for local and gas taxes for highways. Transportation? Everyone pays for their transportation, if it's public, charge what it costs (but you know they waste half their money, look at the MTA). But all those things don't cost anywhere near 7 trillion dollars

@patternote @spinfisher Not the governments job NOPE. but it is the GOVERNMENT’S job to MAINTAIN and IMPROVE INFRASTRUCTURE and its HUMAN CAPITAL. Otherwise your nation rots. Electrical grid? Water? Roads. Transportation. Education? FOOD SUPPLY. The country is rotting. Not even having kids

If the US eliminated defense spending except for basic defense, the US would pay off its 31 trillion dollars debt in the time of a typical home mortgage.

Also interest on debt comes from all the other spending categories. So for the purposes of this exercise you have to fold it back in. $2.5 trillion ss and Medicare 1 trillion medicaid and health 1 trillion income security 1 trillion defense 1 trillion interest on debt 500 billion govt operations Excluding interest on debt, that's 4.5/6 trillion on social programs. Yes I'm counting social security and medicaid. Even if you make 20k a year you're better off investing in a retirement acc than paying SS

@patternote @spinfisher That’s not true. Patternote. Social Spending from taxes other than Social Security and Medicare is about ONE THIRD of the military total spend - wages, benefits, weapons….pensions. Go to OMB website and do the math.

@Crushemsparty @spinfisher Excluding social security and Medicare. The programs that will be bankrupt when it's my turn. That's 15.3% of my income i could invest better than the government ever could

@ForgiatoBlow47 Yes, especially if you have children. Breaking into someone's home is a home invasion and a threat to life. You don't know if he's hiding a weapon or will just grab a knife from your kitchen

SHOULD YOU BE ALLOWED TO SHOOT A PERSON WHO HAS BROKEN INTO YOUR HOUSE, EVEN IF THEY'RE UNARMED?

We can always build more in a regulatory friendly environment. But that's only 1 factor. Would still be affordable if interest rates and property taxes were more leveled. My rate is 4.8% and i pay 800 in interest, current rates would push that to 1100. My property taxes and insurance also went up by 100 a month. If i were to rent my house out under current conditions, i would have to charge an extra 400 to cover it, potentially making it too expensive to even bring to market. One less unit means other units can charge more.

SS is a pretty terrible program. It never gets invested, it never grows, you just take from young to pay old. Someone getting 1200 from SS would get 2700 if the money went into a retirement account instead. Retirement accounts can also be used for long term medical care. Don't forget that what you pay is only half, your employer doubles that for a total of 15.3%. Imagine if it just went to buy stocks or real estate instead for your retirement fund. Medicaid spends 12000 per person, so not efficient. In principal I'm not against it, but there are better solutions for healthcare them feeding an administrative heavy system. I would like to be able to afford my own health insurance, currently 800 a month (why its cheaper than medicaid is beyond me)

@spinfisher Lol maybe help you. It's not the govts job to take from A to give to B. FDR had to introduce income taxes to the poor and middle classes, without which there is no welfare state. Dems always say they want to tax the rich but their actions tell a different story

No because the government wastes our money. Food is expensive because it's more expensive to produce, bills are higher be cause of green energy regulations and pushing everyone onto the electric grid, people can't afford homes because higher material costs, regulation, property taxes and interest rates (thanks to Bidens inflation). Also tens of millions of Americans are invested in these corps. Maybe we should let poor people keep their FULL paycheck and encourage financial literacy, so they can invest in those corps too and maybe have a chance to not be poor
