76ers vs Celtics Game 2 Breakdown🏀
Boston seemingly had this series nearing its end going back to TD Garden, but then Philly broke it open once again Tuesday night. And that's thanks to a few key adjustments:
1) Philadelphia's adopted isolation defensive scheme. 24 3s and a Payton Pritchard 30 bomb later, the 76ers decided playing Tatum/JB straight up in Game 5 and it worked to perfection. On the Celtics' 23 isolations, they got just 0.39 points per direct action. Tatum had a series high in FGA (19), series low in potential assists (8), and Jaylen Brown struggled immensely.
Joel Embiid emphasized this change: "I thought defensively we did a much better job, especially not overhelping as we did last game...Make those guys play one-on-one. And then just go from there." With all that being said, even with the inevitable Mazzulla adjustment, gotta expect Tatum/Brown to get theirs once again.
Tatum had all the room possible off drop coverage leading to open 3s (12 3PA) while JB worked his way into the mid-range and had the pull-up 2s he wanted. Personally played Tatum o34.5 PR, but even his u6.5 assists and 4+ 3s (+164) look good. Don't mind JB overs as well, but really think Tatum can get up in this spot.
2) The Impending Joel Embiid Adjustment. Just one removed in his return, we saw Embiid play a ridiculous game dropping 33 points and 8 assists in Game 5. The Celtics really let him get what he wanted off drop coverage as the center would be too deep against the Maxey slip pass and give him the mid-range or 3 without hesitation. Joel also only got better as the game progressed. Afterwards, Jaylen Brown mentioned: "Yeah, I just feel like he had too many easy baskets. Like, we need to make him work. It was just too easy for him. Even though we want to — you know, we trust our guys to guard certain matchups — we got to make it a little bit tougher."
Do think this could lead to one of two things: the Celtics fully leaning into the 3P variance and more shots for the likes of VJ/Oubre (they do not want Grimes to get off shots) OR Maxey getting more volume in this one with the drop giving him some space to pull as they shade Embiid with the main POA.
Nonetheless, I do expect Embiid's passing to be needed here and Maxey's touches to increase with both guys forced to hit their teammates in some manner. Played Maxey o6.5 assists (5/16 potentials LG, but truly there was 20). Embiid assists is also interesting, but no lean.
3) The Extreme Rebound Upside of this Series. Now, let me just be honest. I despise betting rebounds. But, with that being said, there are way too many good spots in this one with regard to upside so I'm forced to mention it (96 reb combined LG). Neemias Queta does not know how to stay out of foul trouble, but at +680 for a Double-Double, I might have to sprinkle the risk that he learns how to avoid it this game. 8-8 and 8-14 the L2 games, his value on the glass in this matchup is so crucial for the Celtics with the 2nd chance opportunity he creates.
On the flip side, the forwards vs Embiid system is very much alive as Tatum went back to his normal domination with 16 rebounds last game. Maxey/Embiid usage = guys on low usage Oubre/Grimes feasting and Tatum fits that bill.
On the Philly side, the guards seem to hold the value with Maxey having 10 and VJ 7 last game. Embiid defers consistently to preserve energy and with White/Hauser/Walsh/etc now being a lot less involved in the actions due to iso, we're seeing them in great positioning. Have no dog in the fight, but 100% value on both guys.
Honestly am super excited for this game, BOS is a great team, but they are undoubtedly exploitable and if PHI can somehow embrace the 3P battle in TD Garden (easier said than done), we might just see a Game 7.
