A very happy 76th birthday to James Dougles Muir Leno of New Rochelle, NY. Some years back, a mutual friend and I toured Jay's garage and then the three of us went out for Chinese food. Jay's a mensch - down-to-earth, welcoming of fan recognition - and genuinely funny.

We claim Kirwood Derby, er, Durwood Kirby as a Hoosier Ashe moved to Indianapolis when he was 15. He graduated from Arsenal Technical High School in Indianapolis, then entered Purdue University to study engineering. However, he dropped out to become a radio announcer
Steve Stoliar@StoliarSteve

A pre-Garry Moore, pre-"Candid Camera" Durward Kirby was the announcer for a February 1944 episode of radio's "Pabst Blue Ribbon Town" starring Gene Tierney, Groucho, and Fay McKenzie, which was broadcast from the Milwaukee Auditorium that week.

@Noirchick1 "The Addams Family" was far superior in the subtle/clever/humorous department. Much less overt and sitcommy than "Munsters." Probably due to original source material being Chas Addams' "New Yorker" cartoons and the show being produced by Marx Brothers veteran Nat Perrin.

@BizSuperstar I remember that amazing ending to Road to Utopia. Hopes last line to the audience “We adopted him..”

Bob Hope and Greer Garson in a remake of "The Awful Truth"? Yes, and it is very funny - with Margaret Dumont showing up, too! That's today's selection in The Bootleg Files on Cinema Crazed: cinema-crazed.com/blog/2026/04/2…

@scrabo I was unaware of this, too, until it popped up in a slate of suggested videos on YouTube. Hope is hilarious - maybe his best TV work.

@JBondPersuader I’ve always agreed with UAs Jerry Juroe - if there was a bad offense, it was that the scene was SHOT wrong-it’s real but looks fake.

In 1974, composer John Barry nailed this insane 360-degree slide whistle effect for 'The Man with the Golden Gun' in one take - earning a hearty "Don't ever do that again, ever" from everyone.

@scrabo A fair point...after all, he did give them "a hand" in the end, didn't he? Will that one work?😆

April 17, 2004: Canadian actor Bruce Boa dies at 73 in Surrey, UK. Famed for his many screen appearances as "the token American," he is best known for playing General Carlist Rieekan in "Star Wars Episode V: The Empire Strikes Back" (1980) & Lt. Gen Peterson in "Octopussy" (1983)

I love The Big Show; Groucho was on several times and he was always great on it. Tallulah Bankhead was the host and Fred Allen (a genius, by the way) was on very frequently. It's all on internetarchive and OTR and comedy buffs should give it a try. Also, follow @StoliarSteve!

Uncommon photo of Fanny Brice and Groucho during a November 1950 broadcast of "The Big Show," NBC's all-star attempt to keep listeners glued to their radios instead of being distracted by those newfangled television sets. The show lasted two years before NBC threw in the towel.
