We don't HAVE to rely on (or go straight to) "two negatives make a positive" when subtracting negatives. Here are two visuals I recommend when learning this concept.

Teaching tip: Here's how I spice up the activity "Which One Doesn't Belong?"

A neat puzzle- 1. Shade any 2 sections 2. What fraction of the square is shaded? 3. What other fractions are possible? Impossible? This puzzle kicked off discussions at a workshop for PD Hub members.

How can we visually show why something like sqrt(90)=3sqrt(10)? Rewriting square roots can be seen visually! (I know the title doesn't sound appealing but I honestly really like the concept lol)

When subtracting from a number that ends with a lot of zeros, consider subtracting 1 from both numbers so we don't have to "borrow" several times.
