i think the term “perfect victims” is on point. people want them to be the perfect victims, and that is, personally, not good storytelling. also i think people (me included) were expecting parallels/allegories to japan’s colonies and that’s not the direction of the story.

i understand there is some apprehension about the newest chapter having the islanders instigate violence here. personally speaking i don't necessarily think this means that hokazono or the narrative at large are impugning the islanders and saying they deserved to be killed
