@ianharber I believe this rebuttal minimizes the formation that occurs by participating and utilizing these tools. I'd recommend Antón Barba-Kay's "A Web of Our Own Making: The Nature of Digital Formation" for a more in-depth treatment on these specific dangers.

The degree to which one's mind is outsourced to, rather than extended by, the use of our technologies is itself a question we must be in the habit of asking.

I am surprised that this quote from Gandalf isn't seen more often. A wonderful encapsulation of humble conservatism.

After ~12 years, I'm saying goodbye to my favorite company in the world: @sematext It's been a journey beyond my wildest dreams. Defining for me both professionally and personally. I wish nothing but the best to @otisg and the awesome squad. Heh, decent band name, too #dadjokes

@zugzwanged In Robert Alter’s commentary he contrasts the feast Abraham provides for the angelic guests with the lesser feast that Lot provides to the same guests. He also notes the other parallels and antitheses between the two acts of hospitality. It’s worth checking out at least.

Anyone have insights on the ingredients of the meal Abraham and Sarah provided for the angels in Genesis 18: cakes of fine flour, a calf, curds, and milk? Why are we given such specific details? The unleavened bread in Genesis 19 seems significant in an Exodus-pattern narrative.

@dieworkwear I'm heading to Boston (near the Back Bay) in a month or so, do you happen to have any recommendations for good menswear shops in the Boston area?

@leothrix The phrase “weightless packing peanuts” is a great metaphor for LLM-generated prose

I'd really like to support my favorite bands by buying merch, but as a tall person shirts don't really fit because I need tall sizes. I wish more bands had merch that wasn't t-shirts/sweatshirts/hoodies.

The more online text is generated, the less of it we're inclined or expected to read. So the promise of AI-generated text is that so much of it will be generated that we won't be expected to read any of it.

its funny because this is a well known logo, which you may see today while cooking, but it actually makes zero sense without this information. why is she walking in the rain pouring salt? people dont know, she “just is”. the original function is lost, but the form remains.

Well, it took some adjusting, but I've updated my #emacs to swap from helm/projectile/flycheck/lsp-mode to vertico/orderless/consult/marginalia/project/flymake/eglot - so far I'm having fun with a fresh config setup! Things seem snappy and new, yet familiar

@thursdayschild @leothrix I honestly tried doing it in Emacs for a little while, but the customizability there is mostly a negative, and I wanted something easily accessible from every device I own. Obsidian also had the ability to get out of my way easily (Emacs is too tempting when it comes to tweaking)

@leothrix I've been using Obsidian for it. I used Zettlr for a little while, but find I prefer the linking method and tooling of Obsidian more.
