A tale of two months: For the first 12 days of January, Champaign-Urbana temps were 6 degrees above normal. But through 22 days temps are now 3.1 degrees below normal. It's the 31st coldest January of all time (since 1888). A warmup is ahead.

Four consecutive days of subzero weather but the Salt Fork in Champaign County is moving swiftly and is (mostly) ice-free.

Wow - The Great Lakes typically have an ice coverage of 55% during the winter months, causing at least half of their surfaces to freeze. As of yesterday, they had a combined ice cover of just 0.2%. Lake Superior 0.5%, Lake Michigan 0%, Lake Huron 0%, Lake Erie 0%, Lake Ontario 0%

@ratcliffest I got it off a publication the Memorial Stadium Fund committee published with irregular frequency during the fundraising and construction. Publication is available at the UI Archives. They'd like you to put your request in writing so they can pull the collection.

Happy 100th birthday, University of Illinois Memorial Stadium. The first game to be played at the unfinished stadium was a 7-0 win over the University of Chicago, the lone touchdown by Red Grange. Illinois won the mythical national championship that year.

@rfhirschfeld @USACEHQ While you're at it see what you can do about a Red Line extension to C-U. There's just enough space between eastbound and westbound lanes of I-74 west of Prospect for the CTA to add service to Prospect Avenue. A $2.50 fare to Wrigley Field from C-U would be the best bargain ever.

The Springfield Avenue Lazy River must be a line item in the next Water Resources Development Act. The Army Corps can’t rest on its Chicago-River-reversal laurels forever. SALR could be @USACEHQ’s crowning achievement of the 21st century.
Champaign Showers@217Showers

this is a really important question. ideally in a perfect world there will be two separate lanes of traffic going both east and west bound. we could also look into reversing the flow on a daily basis, not dissimilar to the Chicago River or the indoor track at the Leonhard Center.
