Rescue. Recovery. Ready. 🚁🛟 This week's #HWHAP episode is super interesting! Members of the 1st Air Force Detachment 3 (that's the unit embedded at NASA Johnson) explain how they've supported astronaut recovery from the Mercury splashdowns in 1961 all the way to today's Artemis-era planning and Crew Dragon returns. Fun fact: during the early Mercury and Gemini missions, NASA sometimes had up to 20+ ships and thousands of personnel spread across the Atlantic—now it's much leaner thanks to better spacecraft predictability, helicopters with pararescuemen (PJs), and those amazing divers who can handle everything from open-ocean ops to post-landing medical care. The PJs are even trained for extended survival scenarios and have space-specific medical skills. Pretty cool to hear how this quiet partnership keeps getting our astronauts home safely! Great listen → nasa.gov/podcasts/houst…
