The Necromind: The air in the ruined Halo Control Room didn't just smell like ozone and death; it felt heavy, like it was pushing down on them with the cold, certain feeling of death. Three survivors who had faced the end of the universe Master Chief, Commander Shepard, and Isaac Clarke stopped dead in their tracks, completely covered by the shadow of the Necromind. It was a blasphemous insult to both life and machines. The Gravemind's sickly, writhing muscles had tied together the tall, cold-steel skeleton of a Reaper in a horrible way. A huge Red Marker throbbed like a broken, angry heart deep inside its chest. It cast a sickly, bloody glare that filled the heroes' heads with a loud, crazy static. The nightmare bled into the floor below, where the shadows began to move. Out of the dark red blood came a twitching front line: horrible Flood combat forms moving in sickening unison with dead marines whose bodies had been violently turned into Necromorph slashers. The three legends didn't even raise their weapons when they saw this impossible, end-of-the-world fusion. They just stood there in the suffocating dark, frozen in a creeping, bottomless awe, trapped by the horrible thought that there might be no way to survive what the galaxy had just become.
