The family of a Kenyan man working as a cab driver in Dubai has reached out to report that he was attacked by a passenger while on duty, suffering injuries that required medical treatment which he had to pay for himself, while the company he works for is reportedly forcing him to return to work before he has fully recovered.
They are also holding his passport and threatening penalties if he does not comply.
The family is now seeking urgent intervention from the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, saying that UAE authorities have failed to act promptly to protect their son, leaving him exposed to continued threats from his employer while recovering from his injuries.
"Hello Cyprian. My brother travelled to Dubai a few months ago to hustle, just like many other Kenyans. He has a valid passport, paid the required commission fee, and secured a visa to work there as a cab driver. He was trained and was in his first month at work when tragedy befell him. Two weeks ago, he was attacked while on duty by a man who posed as a passenger. Thankfully, he fought for his life and survived. The cab he was driving has CCTV cameras and the entire incident was recorded. The case is currently with the police but it has not yet been mentioned in court. Despite his injuries, the company he works for is forcing him to return to work before he has recovered. They did not take him to the hospital, he had to pay for his own treatment. Now, they are threatening him with penalties for absconding, even though he is still unwell. They are also holding his passport. I am kindly asking you to air the story so that we can get the justice he deserves. We are helpless and do not know who to reach out to. The company had restricted the video against sharing but he somehow accessed it."
