This book changed the way I view reading levels and readers. I gained a deeper understanding of the expectations for readers across different text levels. I can’t wait to use my new learning to help my students. @JSerravallo #UTRbookstudy #kellerliteracy

#kellerliteracy Thank you to Kari Yates and Christina Nosek for writing an amazing book on conferring with readers. The big thing their book taught me is the importance of conferring with an intentional purpose. #kellerisdliteracy

@KatieLuberoff I agree, it’s hard to hold back at first when you see something that needs to be corrected.

A4: the one that stayed with me is don't be too eager to assist or correct. I usually give some time for the student to think and process but I catch myself helping more often/faster than I should. #KellerLiteracy

#kellerliteracy A4: The tip that resonates with me is to initiate a comprehension conversation. It is so important to know for sure if a great decoder understands the text since the purpose of reading is to gain meaning. The charts in the book would help me to start this.

@MrsMorrison4th I agree with you that developing relationships and building trust with all readers are so important.

#kellerliteracy A2: All ss can benefit from having those conversations because RELATIONSHIPS are important! When teachers are taking the time to meet with their readers (no matter their level of support) They are building relationships with their kids. #MyWhyKISD

#kellerliteracy A2: All readers benefit from strategic problem solving and meaning making strategies because students can use these to decode and improve comprehension at their level no matter what stage they are in.

#kellerliteracy A1: I think of reading skills as specific things that are taught like phonics and decoding. I think of reading strategies as ways to problem solve unknown words and ways to make meaning regardless of your reading stage. It’s important to model them explicitly.

A3 I like this quote from pg. 70, “No factor has more influence on motivation, meaning making, joy, and overall growth than allowing students to choose books for themselves.” #kellerliteracy

A2 Lots of high interest books. Some to stretch students and some fun to read but lots and lots of fun books. #kellerliteracy

#kellerliteracy A3: I would tell them that self -selected books are important for reading engagement. The time is well spent teaching students a skill that they can use outside of school which will help them to read more.

#kellerliteracy A2: A classroom that values self selected books would have a variety of genres and topics to choose from. There would be discussions about books and written book recommendations. Students would be highly engaged in reading and have less off task behavior.
