Anthony Kay (2023) Kay pitched in 13 games for the 2023 Cubs. He signed a free agent contract with the White Sox this past winter after a strong showing in Japan in 2024 and 2025.

The beginning of the end for the core.

Matt Mervis (2023-2024) Mervis slashed .307/.379/.605 with 36 homers and 119 RBI across three levels of minor leagues in 2022. Excitement was high when he debuted in 2023 but his minor league success did not translate to success at the big league level.

Matt Swarmer (2022) In his first two MLB starts, Swarmer went six innings against both the Brewers and Cardinals allowing just two total earned runs and striking out a combined 11 batters. He got a no-decision in his debut against Milwaukee and earned the win against St. Louis.

Andrew Chafin (2020-2021) The Cubs traded Chafin to Oakland prior to the trade deadline in 2021 for Greg Deichmann and a Low-A starting pitcher named Daniel Palencia.

Trent Giambrone (2021) Giambrone had two hits in 13 at bats at the end of the 2021 season.

Moving PCA to LF in the eighth inning might be the dumbest thing I’ve seen in a baseball game in a while.
