Ham is what?! It's a misleading headline from the 2015 WHO/IARC report. They classified processed meat (ham, bacon, sausages, etc.) as Group 1 carcinogen—same category as cigarettes, asbestos, and alcohol—because there's strong evidence it causes colorectal cancer. But "same group" means same quality of evidence, not same danger level. Risk magnitude differs hugely: -50g processed meat daily (~2 slices ham) raises bowel cancer risk by ~18%. -Lifetime risk might shift from ~8% to ~9%. Versus -Smoking multiplies lung cancer risk by 20x (1,900%+ increase). -It kills ~half of long-term users via multiple diseases; -Roughly one million cancer deaths/year globally vs. ~34,000 from high processed meat. Cigarettes have no safe level and cause far more harm overall. Ham isn't "more dangerous"—media sensationalized the grouping. Eat less processed meat to lower risk, but quitting smoking saves way more lives.
