Imagine a world where a universal pitch count standard was based around actual workload cost of throwing & not just picking a random number out of a hat.
Even better, a standard with an on-ramp period ensuring athletes have adequate time to increase their workload capacity.

There are 5 ways to get out as a batter in baseball/softball. There are 15 ways to have a productive/successful at bat. Stop dwelling on outcomes. Stop dwelling on the negative. You have 3x the chances of having a productive at bat than an unproductive at bat.

@hossjob My son got cut from his team…final got “some reasoning” from his coach 3 weeks later. Was told that he is probably gonna be the kid who plays longest out of the whole team but is getting cut cuz he basically isn’t refined enough right now…going into 13u. SMH

Literally, your only goal when coaching youth sports is to make the kids WANT to come back. That’s it. That’s all. It’s also the same for 16u & everything in between.

What if you could define the workload cost of each throw a kid makes?
What if that defined cost allows for a new pitch count standard that's based on real workload?
What if that new pitch count actually standard stops a kid's workload from getting blown out?

@hossjob Could not agree more!!! I have to constantly remind players and parents, that some failure at the plate is not a bad thing…the number of people who think their young kid should be perfect all the time and immediately go to mechanics is staggering…mechanics is last adjustment.

Meanwhile some people claim optimizing very specific mechanics is the only way to be good. Here’s the truth. There’s no 1 way. There are principles. But those principles don’t mean a think w/o timing, rhythm, mindset, reaction time, pitch selection, & a whole slew of other things

@hossjob Been talking with my hitters about evaluating their previous at bat…I think goes with this.
1. Did I swing at good pitches?
2. Was I on-time?
3. Did I have good intent?
If one of those 3 is not a yes…that’s probably what I need to focus on in my next at bat…not mechanics.

If you are 13, 13 & weak, 23 & weak, 43 & weak, (see a trend), literally all you need to do is squat, hinge, push, pull, sprint, jump, & brace. Consistently. And slowly make each of those movements for more reps, time, or with greater weight. It’s actually really easy.
