Today in 1966: Astros and Dodgers players fly from spring training to the Houston Astrodome to test something new: an artificial surface. The world’s first domed stadium opened in 1965 with a glass-covered roof that allowed real grass to grow. But players lost fly balls due to the glare on the glass. So they replaced the grass with an artificial surface called ChemGrass. During this March 1996 test, players found that the balls bounced too high. Engineers added more sand under the rug to make it behave more like natural grass, and the first game on artificial turf was played on April 18, 1966. ChemGrass quickly became known as AstroTurf. #MLB #baseball #Astros #Astrodome #AstroTurf
