At @CubbyBeds, we won $500k+ from pitch competitions, worked out of a friend's garage, and used my old Subaru to haul our first couple hundred beds to the post office. I didn't take a salary for years. Not easy, but it kept us focused on what matters most: our mission. There's usually a scrappy solution if you're willing to think outside the box.
