Rant on news events, black swans and why market cycles are more important (controversial) While our $BTC long trade idea is going fully to plan, just going to post another slight(ly) (controversial) rant here, because well, trading and investing successfully involves accepting the right controverse, which is why only a small percentage comes out on top (those who see through all the non-sense). Also had a lot of success and eye-opening discussion on here on our last rant, which is nice to see because you all seem to have an open mind towards these type of things. And I do believe it will open the eyes of many once again so here you go. Everything below, just my opinion for your entertainment on my philosophy on how to trade and invest (fearlessly) and how to not worry about the news or black swans at any point in time. Also some real life examples included on #bitcoin / #crypto because that's what I almost exclusively trade and invest in. Going to keep it short and sweet, not lifting the full thesis but just sparking your interest and critical minds, because going deep will need a longer form post and longer reading so trying to prevent that. That aside, here we go. Black swans and news events defined So before starting, just my quick thoughts on what a Black Swan (BS) and general news events are. Essentially they are both the same, and BS's are of the worst end (news events could be positive). So I am just going to talk about black swans and you can assume news falls under the same umbrella, where black swans are negative, apply the opposite to positive events. So aside from the definition of "a BS is something very bad that happened and causes markets to drop", I am giving it a slightly different definition of "a BS is a single moment in time, in which an excuse is framed for the market to drop sharply towards current demand". See it's never longer than pretty much a single day or sometimes week and it's never deeper than where heavy demand is locally. It is also never "the end of everything" or "an event that could nuke $BTC back to sub 10k". And while I'm not saying that couldn't happen ever, I am saying that it can't happen if a black swan where to happen right now. Just think about it, why did the covid black swan take us down to 4000$, but why did the event of escalations involving Israel not take us anywhere close? Seemingly, that news is way worse, right? And why did the day of Russia invading Ukraine not make us drop more than 10% whilst it was arguably one of the worst events of the first half of this decade in terms of political distress. Why did price go lower afterwards, through events totally unrelated to war, rather just through the natural market cycle of leveraging - deleveraging. And why did the FTX collapse not take us down more than 30%, whilst FTX was probably one of the biggest market movers at the time? I am sure you all have a reason for yourself. But it's truly important to question these things and try to have a holistic view. There is no absolute in the consequences on the market price of black swans. They don't always give a bad drop (if ever out of bounds) and they don't always form the bottom. And once you assume that philosophy, you understand that there is no need to be afraid for black swans, you can invest without the fear of them happening. And even better, if they happen, knowing this will stop you from panic selling or buy more with a calm mind, and thus allow you to be a holistic and successful investor, seeing them as an opportunity. Forget black swans, learn cycle theory So, I just told you that black swans (and news drivers) don't have a large impact if at all on the high timeframes and in fact shouldn't be feared, if ever especially if you are an investor. So why do black swans not always create a bottom and why are there such inconsistencies on their result? This is where the definition comes in. They are IMO an excuse for the market to drop towards "whale demand" and for price to be manipulated to that area. In other words, during a black swan, price does nothing but move towards where whales want the market to move to, (mostly the current high timeframe demand). And the high timeframe demand levels eb and flow and change over time, along with the cyclical nature of the markets. This is why the Ukraine invasion didn't take us down to 4k and covid did. This is also why you shouldn't hope or wait for any black swan in the future in the hopes to buy at 4k if the current cyclical demand is way higher. This is also why you shouldn't get shaken out of your $BTC spot positions you bought near the bottom if said "black swan" happened near the top (not too long ago). And most importantly, this is also why you shouldn't fear black swans triggering a bear market. I mean look at the covid crash, it trigger a bull market, i.e. the opposite. And yes, a valid excuse: that last one was because of the money printer. Sure. Well if you believe in the cyclical money printer, you must believe in the leverage-deleveraging cycles because they go hand in hand. Conclusion: its all about the market cycles So now with all that said, it just comes down to one conclusion: trust market cycles, and do not worry about the news, (trust the opposite of the news). To understand that, it is beneficial to understand how market cycles work. Not without going too in depth here. But cycles are nothing but equally spaced time intervals where the overall paradigm continuously shifts back and forth from "prices are low" to "prices are high" back to "prices are low", rinse and repeat.. Along with that, evolves whales their willingness to bid and sell higher and "whales their willingness to bid only lower and sell also less high". See the chart below on both boundaries marked in Blue (whale demand) and Red (whale supply). If a black swan happens, it only takes price (closer) to whale demand, if good news happens, price moves to whale supply. This explains why black swans do not take price excessively low (or good news excessively high). It explains why the covid crash didn't take price below 3k, because we were already progressed further in the (monetary) cycle, this is also why the Ukraine invasion nuked us to sub 12k (what many were calling for) and why price went lower after (because the cycle allowed us to do so). And finally, this also explains why the current black swan didn't take us much further down than 50k. Instead, if you truly want price to move further, that takes time. And that is true for many reasons I won't go in right now, but just think of big money. That takes time to move. It's a beautiful conclusion (if you accept it). Because waiting for prices takes time instead (it's not going to happen on one BS event), time to wait for the cycle to progress to it favoring your prices (whether for buying or selling) is the essence of successful investing (and trading on the lower timeframes, because trading = investing on the lower timeframes and vice versa). This philosophy also alleviates stress, because nothing unpredictable can get in the way of your investments/trades. And with that said, you understood once again, that time is the most important element of the market. Only those who can wait, can win. That concludes my heavily opinionated post on black swans, news, and trading. Only the tip of the iceberg as I left many points of discussion open, maybe for another time.
