Florissant Fire Protection District 🧯⚖️ Erik Holt served as Fire Chief of the Florissant Fire Protection District in Teller County, Colorado. In May 2023, following a local board election, Holt was contacted by investigators from the Fourth Judicial District Attorney’s Office regarding security footage from a polling location housed at the fire station. Thirty-three days later, the District’s newly seated board voted to terminate Holt’s employment “for cause,” a designation Holt disputes as pretext for retaliation related to his cooperation in the investigation. The case centers on a key Constitutional question: whether a public employee may be disciplined for speaking as a private citizen on a matter of public concern. Link in bio to listen live!

Just sitting thinking about this journey and this fight I’ve been fighting the last 3 years. I keep waiting for the nervous energy to hit but it hasn’t come. Today, I went to the U.S. Tenth Circuit Court of Appeals, went through security and walked around the halls. I was quiet and reserved, but it wasn’t nerves. It was awe. I have such a profound and deep respect for our country and our constitution that I just felt proud walking in the halls of the second highest court of these United States. The reality is my name is on the docket tomorrow. Holt vs. Florissant Fire Protection District. It is not lost on me how crazy that is, but I truly believe there are no nerves because this isn’t just my fight. This is a case about the First Amendment of the Constitution of the United States of America. My name is on the case. My pain and struggles are in the text. But, this country and its founding principles are so much greater than I will ever be, than any of us will ever be. So, on the eve of this case I just want to thank everyone that has supported me. Everyone that has shared my story and allowed me to feel the support to keep going. I wish this journey on nobody, but my struggles are so much less than those that have given the ultimate sacrifice to defend this nation, so much less than what our founding fathers sacrificed to give us such an amazing and beautiful country. I am honored, and I am a humbled man to be given the chance to defend just a small part of what makes us the greatest nation in the history of civilization!
