⚠️ Why the storm forecast that scared D.C. fell short
Monday brought one of the most ominous severe weather forecasts in years, including a rare Level 4 out of 5 risk for damaging winds and tornadoes.
Schools dismissed early and plans changed but while there were indeed many reports of severe weather (111 severe wind reports), some of the most feared impacts never materialized.
Here’s what happened:
• Limited storm fuel: Thick cloud cover held temperatures down, reducing the instability needed for widespread severe storms
• Early storms “used up” energy: A late-morning line likely “stole the second round’s thunder”
• Downdrafts couldn’t get going" Moist air near the surface limited the ability for strong winds aloft to reach the ground
At the same time, the concern was justified. The setup had the ingredients for dangerous storms, and had those ingredients come together differently, the outcome could have been far worse.
But this event also highlights something important:
👉 We need to do a better job communicating uncertainty.
Severe storms are highly sensitive to small changes. Even with strong signals, they’re not guaranteed. That nuance didn’t come through clearly enough.
Forecasting severe weather remains one of meteorology’s hardest challenges — and this was a reminder that how we communicate risk is just as important as the forecast itself.

Is amazing that @POTUS treats Putin better than @ZelenskyyUa ! They are killing American soldiers and attacking American businesses with the technology and information that Russia gives to Iranian leadership, this must end!! And Ukraine wants to give us the technology to shoot down the Iranian drones that have shut down the straits of Hormuz. Our president needs to know the difference between our friends and our enemies!

*** Evening update on Monday severe storm threat in DC region ***
We are continuing to monitor potential for severe storms at some point on Monday. Two things are true:
1) The atmospheric ingredients forecast to come together Monday translate to an usually high chance of severe storms -- capable of damaging winds, hail and tornadoes -- for the middle of March in the DC area.
2) Even when a lot of atmospheric ingredients are in place anytime of the year, it doesn't always produce a widespread outbreak of severe weather in our region.
Some key points to keep in mind:
* Isolated to scattered thunderstorms could pop during the morning into early afternoon. Can't rule out them producing severe winds or a tornado, although chances of that are higher later in the day.
* Multiple clusters or lines of storms could come through during the afternoon into evening, or the activity could end up more focused as a single line toward evening.
* Storms have the potential to topple trees and power lines, leading to outages. If severe storms become numerous across the region, then significant travel disruptions and flight delays are possible.
* While the timing of the worst storms is hard to pin down (we hope to have a better idea by morning), it won’t be many straight hours of non-stop severe weather. So if a warning is issued for your location or where you're headed, play it safe and delay travel until the threat has paused or passed.
Repeating from an earlier post, here are some tips to prepare:
- Secure or bring loose outdoor items inside
- Charge electronic devices
- Be aware that downed trees could block routes after the storm
- Park your cars away from the trees
- As a severe storms passes, move to the lowest floor and stay away from windows.
Finally: Have multiple ways to receive storm warnings Monday.

Cherry blossom buds hit Stage 2 of 6 today. Warm weather this week -- notwithstanding huge drop in temps Thurs -- has moved them along. Still thinking a slow-ish bloom cycle ahead given chilly weather next week and rest of March.
