@DanNeidle But why link CGT rates to an individual's income tax band? Why not a separate tiered system based entirely on the size of the capital gains themselves in each tax year?

Also the problem: long term investors get no allowance for inflation. Invest £100k in 2016 and get £150k back today, and that's a gain of only £10k after inflation. But you pay £12k tax on that £10k of "real" gain. Effective rate 120%. Disincentive to long term investment

As of today Ed Davey's European policy is *less pro European* than the two leading Labour contenders to be Prime Minister. This is an utterly mad bit of positioning. We Liberal Democrats are a pro-European party - so why on earth don't we say that we want to rejoin the EU?
