Early 20s Syndrome When I was 23 years old, I kept asking my boss and mentor for a promotion. A raise. Some "promise" of where I was headed in the future. After asking three times, he said: "You have Early 20s Syndrome.... BAD." I asked him what that was. Early 20s Syndrome is a paralyzing obsession with the future, depriving yourself of the present—when being present is what's required to get you to the future you desire. It's counter-intuitive. When you're in your 20s, you think obsessing about the future will "get you there faster." As a result, you: • Constantly change focus (or jobs, or even careers) • Constantly chase the next shiny object • Constantly question where you are "today" • Constantly compare yourself to everyone else—where they are, how fast they're progressing, etc. You're exhausted, but you aren't actually moving. You're running in place. How do you cure Early 20s Syndrome? You have to let go of the future. Anyone "successful" in their 20s is far less focused on where they're headed, and far more focused on: • Acquiring skills • Getting in the reps • Practicing good habits • Obsessively improving 1% each day Because the only way "future-You" comes to be is if "present-You" puts in the work. Which means every minute you spend daydreaming, wondering, questioning "future-You," that version of yourself gets further and further away. Whereas every minute you spend working on "present-You," the closer and closer you get to your imagined "future-You" self. Until enough days pass. And enough skills are acquired. And suddenly, "future-You" is You, today.
