Today marks the death anniversary of Évariste Galois, a French mathematician and political activist. He wrote his most important work at just 18 years old and died in a duel at 20. Galois solved a long-standing, widely studied problem: he proved there is no universal formula for solving polynomial equations of degree 5 or higher. He uncovered a profound link between two branches of mathematics—group theory and field theory. Through this, he founded entirely new mathematical fields that paved the way for countless researchers afterward. It’s staggering to imagine what he might have achieved had he lived longer.

The sum of two consecutive integers is equal to the difference of their squares. For example: 13 + 14 = 27 and 14² - 13² = 27.

If your idea of math is boring, you're in for a surprise with François Viète. This 16th-century French genius revolutionized algebra. Before Viète, algebra was written out in long, confusing sentences. He introduced the use of letters to represent unknowns, laying the foundation for modern algebraic notation. But wait—there’s more! He was also a cryptanalyst, cracking secret codes during the French Wars of Religion. Talk about a versatile mind! Viète’s work didn’t stop at algebra or cryptography. He made significant contributions to trigonometry, geometry, and even astronomy. His methods were so groundbreaking that he was nicknamed the Father of Modern Algebra. So next time you solve for x, give a nod to François Viète for making it all possible.
