Personally I tend to agree with Nikolaos Loudovikos and Jean-Luc Marion that Augustine is in fact part of the problem. My preferred solution at this stage would be to pivot towards Dionysius the Areopagite and Bonaventure, as well as Maximus the Confessor. For a long time I tended to sympathize with Balthasar’s critique of Eckhart, but I’m also increasingly thinking that Eckhart can be seen as trying to save Dominican thought from the Islamic univocal tendencies that had snuck into Thomism.

We should have the courage to say openly that the main problem with Thomism is simply that it conceded too much to the lovelessness of Muslim thought and so deviated from the more authentically Johannine Christian tradition of the patristic age
