💡 Public relations pro's are not journalists. (We talk to them. But we are not them.) This might seems obvious to you. I guarantee, it's not obvious to a lot of CEOs and even some seasoned VPs of #Marketing. How do I know? I do a lot of sales calls every month for @MindMeldPR We run through the client's business objectives, their marketing and PR objectives, see how that aligns with our process and results, etc. Typical sales call stuff. In at least 25 percent of these calls, the person in the company that says they want #PR services gives me this line: ❓ "So... just to clarify, you write articles and then the news outlets just publish that, right?" 🤔 Well, no. That's paid media. Advertorials. Basically, advertising with a disclaimer somewhere at the top or bottom saying that this is not news. Sponsored content, paid content, advertorial, etc. That's what that is. (BTW, sponsored content isn't always bad. We absolutely have helped some PR clients with writing thought leadership pieces and getting them published. No problem. But that's not typically what we do all day long.) What do we do, if we don't focus on paid media? Our PR pro's reach out to actual reporters in top mainstream news media (eg. newspapers, magazines, TV, radio, podcasts, etc.) and niche trade publications and everything in between. We don't typically send a finished article. What we send is a pitch. A really good idea, with some proof to back it up, targeted to that particular reporter, so that they will create a news story about our client. This PR effort requires an in-depth understanding of your business and industry and the stories we can tell about it. Good PR requires top-notch writing skills and creativity. It requires data-driven targeting and customization. And it requires persistence. Sometimes, a pitch doesn't get picked up until the 2nd or 3rd time you bug a reporter (and that's a critical skill in itself: being seen as helpful and not annoying as you reconnect each time). 4 innovative tech companies asking about PR services from @MindMeldPR in 2 weeks... from people I met at big conferences I attended (3, 5 and 8) years ago. 😎 Unexpected -- but awesome! As a founder, I put some effort into networking at events. Got to keep that sales pipeline flowing. 😕 But TBH, a lot of the time the results from personal networking can seem underwhelming. Until they're not. In each case of these new leads, the founders were early-stage startup founders. We had a good connection over coffee, or maybe just standing in line waiting for a conference session to start. And TBH, I thought these connections might never amount to anything. The newly resurrected leads are a pleasant surprise - and a nice end-of-year bump to our PR agency's growth prospects for next year. 🤔 Now, if I had to rely on a 3-year, 5-year, or in one extreme case, 8-year sales cycle for business... 💀 I would have starved to death long ago. You need to eat in the meantime. 🫠 So... every day, we're 'hunting' with PR outreach to build buzz (yes, we do that for ourselves, not just clients), lead prospecting, newsletter content, blog content, boosted social posts, polite-but-diligent email check-ins... whatever it takes to build the business. 🌳 And in all of this, the smart strategy is to plant seeds. Yes, instant results is always nice. Sometimes, you can sell from a single meeting. It happens. And I'm grateful for all those quick wins. They keep our team busy -- and fed. But a great thing happens if you plant seeds (at networking events, conferences, or via content with news coverage, blog posts, social media, newsletters, etc.). 😋 Once you've put in that effort, the harvest can come in. Then you get the short-sales-cycle AND the long-sales-cycle prospects calling you up. Related: Yours truly will be representing Mind Meld PR Inc. at #CES (Consumer Electronics Show) in the new year! The January event, in sunny #LasVegas bills itself as the most powerful tech conference around! Very much looking forward to connecting (and reconnecting) with #tech founders coming in from #SanFrancisco, #Austin, #Boston, #NewYork, #Toronto, #Vancouver and many of the other innovation hubs where our #PR clients hail from.
