@MirilynSharp It is all attention-seeking. She was tweeting on Yom Kippur about her hatred of Israel and all things Jewish. Can you imagine being at Osgoode right now? It is horrific. But what is more interesting is her need to be at the centre all of the time…

My younger brother Jason grew up to be an incredible, witty, funny, generous, and brilliant man. He made friends and family around the world, and we are grieving with them. Jason has meant so much to so many, in many different ways, and he always will.

I’m not usually one to post a “believe in yourself” message because I think they’re quite corny, but here I go….
A few years ago, one of my wonderful mentors, @hilary_book, started her own firm. I was in awe of her business acumen and tenacity; she absolutely crushed it right out of the gate. I remember wishing that I, too, could be that awesome and courageous. Over the years, she was consistent in her messaging when we connected: If I wanted to do my own thing, too, I was more than capable of it.
It took several years for the message to really sink in, and for me to find the faith and confidence in myself to step out of the comfortable confines of the large law firms that I had spent many years working at.
While it’s still very early days yet, I can say that the experience of starting my own firm and working with other lawyers on a freelance basis has been nothing short of amazing so far. I just finished drafting one of the most interesting factums to cross my desk in a long time, I’m working with someone (who was formerly opposing counsel over the years!) on a new file with subject matter that we’re both passionate about, & I have a handful of my own clients who I adore advocating for.
The me who existed even a few years ago never would have even dreamed of doing what I am doing right now with my life and career. I still wake up many mornings and can’t believe this is actually *my* life, and that it’s real.
It wouldn’t be me if I didn’t add that I am cognizant of the fact that I’m likely still in a honeymoon period of sorts. I am sure there are many reality checks and learning moments to come. However, I am confident in the fact that nothing could dimish the joy that I have found over the last few months in finally finding the confidence to begin betting on myself.
