Advice needed Would secondary literacy leads recommend literacy mats per subject? Literacy was raised as the biggest barrier to GCSE success this year. Priorities for this year is targeting the students with below average reading ages @FunkyPedagogy @LiteracyEngine @Miss_Khaliq

I always disliked full-on ‘book review’ tasks but loved designing Reading Journals which I could quickly check. I made termly A5 booklets where students could make weekly reflections and ‘magpie’ words. Anything else was an optional extra but I looked forward to checking these!

A timeline’ of Shakespeare’s life I used to intro him to KS3. This contains the bare facts/evidence for him so that they have confidence forming their own opinion of his writing. They’d follow a ppt ‘lecture’ I’d give with photos & map key facts onto this as they listened.

@H_Miss88 I’ve trialled it during form time once a fortnight with all year 8s this year. I would at would work a lot better once a week. There was a mix of classics and contemporary novels. It is being expanded to year 7&8 next year. The books will rotate every term so plan is 3 a year

Is it worth using one session of tutor time a week to read a novel with a year group? If you only had one 30 minute session to focus on reading, what would you do?

@LauraLolder We had a revision session this morning 7:45 - 8:30 and it was the exact extract for A Christmas Carol we talked through. Last weeks lessons were all on Ambition and Leadership for Macbeth

Presenting to SLT tomorrow about Literacy over the last year and for the year moving forward

@OCR_English I am marking mocks for year 13 and one of the students has answered the close analysis from American literature (tried to link to Gothic) but the gothic statement question. How do I go about marking it? #TeamEnglish #ALevel

@nourishworkplce They may be mapped out by SLT but at my school the teachers only find out about 2 days before they go live to parents for booking. Communication is a major issue

Secondary school staff, help me understand something. Do you have key events (parent's evenings, revision events, information events) mapped out from Sept but you choose to tell parents with a few weeks notice or are you only booking these things in yourself short notice?

Wow! I was not expecting my last post to go as mad as it has 🤣 So many DMs and requests for the Literacy booklet. I am more than happy to share but as of 12pm today school is officially out for summer & I'm heading abroad this weekend. Promise I'll share when I can!
