Jerry brought me home an eagle feather today. There is an eagle nest less than a quarter mile from my house, we see them often, but it’s a beautiful thing when we find one of their feathers. He brought me to where he found it, and I gave an offering of tobacco in thanks Something that a lot of people don’t know, is that keeping a raptor feather, or a migratory bird feather is illegal in the United States unless you are Native American. The fines can get quite steep, up to $15,000 and even jail time. It’s not unheard of here in New England for undercover agents to be at powwow’s, looking for people selling these feathers to non natives. I think that our priorities are a lil fucked up when we dedicate time and energy into performative moral high grounds and never recognize when real shit happens. One day you’re good, the next you’re at risk of having your livelihood jeopardized for having the “wrong” opinion. If you’re consistent, you’re an antihero. If you’re objective, you’re a fence sitter. If you expect better, you’re disloyal. If your morals translate to real action, you’re crazy. Don’t be afraid to be the bad guy. Embrace that shit.
