There are photographers who take pictures of naked bodies. And then there is Salva Ferma, who photographs something else entirely. In his images, the nakedness is almost incidental. What you see first, what stops you, is the person. A man kneeling on the sand, head bowed, arms wrapped around himself. A woman covered in tattoos looking directly at the camera with the quiet confidence of someone who stopped apologising for her body a long time ago. A young woman against a stone wall, eyes closed, completely still. A man curled on a white pedestal like a living sculpture. All of them naked. All of them completely themselves. We've been practising nudism for over a decade. We've guided groups through the Pyrenees, the Austrian lakes, the Colombian jungle. We've seen what happens when people take their clothes off in a wild place for the first time that particular moment when the performance stops and the real person appears. Salva's photography captures exactly that moment. Not the nakedness. The person underneath it. His black and white is not a stylistic choice. It's an ethical one. Colour photography of the naked body carries too much baggage, it reads as erotic, or clinical, or documentary, depending on who's looking. Black and white removes all of that. What remains is form, light, shadow, and the specific quality of a human presence. You can feel, in every image, that the person in front of the camera chose to be there. That they trusted the person behind it. That the photograph is something made together, not taken from someone. In the nudist community, this distinction is everything. But what moves us most in Salva's work is what he does with diversity and with love. He photographs every kind of body with the same attention and the same light. Young, old, full, thin, tattooed, pregnant, Black, white. He doesn't adjust his gaze depending on who's in front of him. Every body gets the same quality of seeing. And his photographs of people together, couples holding each other, two women back to back with one hand resting on the other's shoulder, are not sexual images. They are images about what it feels like to be naked and not alone. About the particular safety of being completely seen by someone who isn't going anywhere. That is what nudism, at its best, actually is. We wrote about Salva because his work is the best visual argument we know for what we believe: That all bodies are worth seeing. That nakedness without shame is not provocative. it's human. That freedom and dignity are not opposites of vulnerability. They come from it. Full article at blog/web —> link in first comment.
