@OO1O110 That sounds like an excuse to justify whatever the administration decides to do. It's also self-defeating. If your argument is the left has broken the law and system, why would voters support MAGA saying, "We can do it too because we're following precedent." It fixes nothing.

@OneDailyLink I found it to be problematic as well as precedent setting. The judiciary demoted itself when it allowed Biden to set precedent by ignoring their ruling. I'm not sitting here pretending it hasn't created a problem, or that most of these new rulings are anything but overreach.

In @thehill, @mattklewis lays out in stark terms the potential consequences of Trump's face-off with the courts over Kilmar Abrego Garcia. Anyone defending the administration over its accidental deportation of Garcia should consider the long game. (1/3)

@OO1O110 I agree this is ongoing, and maybe Trump's stance is just posturing. But the judgments haven't gone his way and he remains defiant even after a Supreme Court ruling. That's not world ending, but it's not any different than Biden's behavior, which you and I both found problematic.

@OneDailyLink @mattklewis I don't know that any laws are being denied here. As far as I can tell, there's executive discretion that may apply to this case. I suppose the courts will figure that out.

@OO1O110 @mattklewis Doesn't denying them or threatening to deny them crack the law further, especially when there are ways to bring him back, rescind his status, and deport him. This feels like an unnecessary distraction and unforced error when the polls are otherwise on Trump's side on this topic.

@OneDailyLink @mattklewis You mistake the argument I'm making. As far as I'm concerned, the law has already been cracked and a reconstitution is in order. We are a century beyond constitutional order. What we have now is a mimicry of that. Eventually, we'll either devolve or reconstruct - or both.

@OO1O110 @mattklewis That path seems perfectly reasonable to me. After all, the administration did say it mistakenly deported Garcia. I'm not an advocate of illegal immigration. I think the system has been horribly abused. But the man - right or wrong, good or bad - had legal protections...

@OO1O110 So are you saying that because the law is cracked and we're beyond constitutional order, certain laws aren't applicable? Our conversation started over Trump thumbing his nose at the courts. But there are legal avenues to repatriate Garcia and then try to rescind his protections.

@OO1O110 @mattklewis Again, I say this as an independent and someone who doesn't find the main parties (including MAGA) wholly objectionable or utterly wonderful. Each has its plusses and minuses. But one party being wrong doesn't make the others right by default.

@OO1O110 @mattklewis If MAGA is opposed to the left ignoring or flouting the law, how does MAGA ignoring or flouting the law as you say it must serve to restore it? How does that demonstrate MAGA's respect for the law?

@OO1O110 @mattklewis I don’t say this as someone opposed to everything Trump does. Our link today is from a law professor saying this whole matter isn’t a constitutional crisis, which I agree with. I just think consistency is key here.

@OO1O110 @mattklewis I just want to start by saying it’s hard to convey tone on Twitter, so I want to say I view this as a discussion, not an argument, and it seems like you feel the same. If I come off as confrontational, that’s not my intention.

@OO1O110 @mattklewis In the interest of consistency, is there a MAGA columnist who disagrees with both Trump’s flouting of the courts as well as Biden’s? Shouldn’t that be the standard, since they undoubtedly and rightly opposed Biden’s position?

Will this be defensible if Garcia dies in El Salvador? What if more are accidentally deported? You can be a hardliner on illegal immigration without supporting the administration full bore. In fact, that would currently make you a more credible spokesman on the topic. (2/3)
