Pidgin English: Nigeria’s True Language of Unity
Pidgin English deserves more respect than it currently gets. In a country as diverse as Nigeria—with hundreds of languages—Pidgin is one of the few languages that almost everyone understands. From the streets to campuses, markets to offices, it connects people from different ethnic backgrounds without barriers.
Communication is not about sounding “perfect”; it is about understanding. If two people understand themselves clearly, then communication has already achieved its purpose. That is exactly what Pidgin does—it simplifies English and makes it accessible to millions.
Many countries already use simplified or adapted versions of English in everyday communication. What matters is clarity, not imitation of foreign standards. Instead of looking down on what naturally works for us, we should embrace it and be proud of it.
Pidgin is not a sign of poor education; it is a sign of cultural innovation. A language created by the people, for the people, to bridge differences.
Maybe it’s time we start seeing Pidgin English for what it truly is: a powerful unifying language.
