@GenAI_is_real @InverseMarcus If you look at functionality per $ spent on RAM, things are fine. My old 486 with 4MB RAM could browse the web fine. That seems quaint now. The weird thing is that my MacBook Pro in 2012 had 16GB RAM, and I would have expected that to also seem quaint by now.

unpopular take: 8GB is not the problem, software bloat is. i used an 8GB mac for years and it was fine because the programs were lean. now a browser tab takes 500MB and an electron app eats 1GB just to show you a text editor. we kept throwing more RAM at the problem instead of writing efficient software. if the industry spent half the energy on optimization that it spends on adding features, 8GB would be plenty in 2026. the real question isnt why apple ships 8GB, its why we need 32GB to run a chat app @steipete
