Americans only have internal multilingualism. I think this is why they struggle to broaden their thinking when engaging this topic. If you consider internal multilingualism, there are over 100 languages is South Africa. Mpondo, Phuthi, Lobedu, Tshillafuri, etc, are examples.

nation. This is how ALL South African languages are. So, in SA, we have multilingualism AND international multilingualism. South Africans often code-switch within the same language group as well as translanguage across languages.

with languages that are not mere dialects. Let’s take isiXhosa as an example. AmaGcaleka speak a different dialect from amaRharhabe. But they both speak isiXhosa. Then amaMpondo speak isiMpondo. It is not a dialect of isiXhosa. It is its own language. AmaMpondo are their own

Firstly, South Africa has 12 official languages. Whithin these languages, there are varieties. Some are dialects but some are their own languages. Language isn’t simply just a communication tool, it is a carrier of culture. There are entire cultures, clans, tribes and nations

Let me clarify something for the American academics who struggle with the concept of multilingualism. America is monolingual. Their language is English. English, like any other language, has several varieties. But they are all Englishes. South Africa is different. 🧵
