I was no Orban fan but he was constantly called a dictator, autocratic and fascist but in the end lost a democratic election and left peacefully. Look at Iran THAT'S a fascist dictatorship.

I’ve done reporting in Hungary & people are applying an inaccurate US-framing to the election result. The opposition that won in Hungary came out of Orban’s Fidesz party. The Tisza party is also right-wing, just less skeptical of the EU. They are anti-mass migration & pro-family.

@HonTonyAbbott Hungary under Orban became the number one corrupt country in the EU. It’s economy is one of he worst in the EU. He went after media that criticised him. He supported a dictator. Putin, over a democratic nation.

Lots of weird takes on the Hungarian election result from both left and right here. Peter Magyar is a socially conservative immigration restrictionist who wants to cut taxes and double the defence budget. He criticized Orban for admitting too many guest workers, and wants to increase Hungary's already generous pro-natal incentives. On virtually every issue, his platform is well to the right of centre, by European standards. His foreign policy is to end Orban's alliance with Putin, remove the Hungarian veto on EU loans to Ukraine, normalize relations with the European Union while opposing more Euro integration, and strengthen relations with Eastern Europe's anti-Russian governments, e.g. Poland. His election was not a sudden shift to the left, but a rejection of Orban's corruption, the failure of his interventionist / statist economic policies, and the humiliation of his relationship with Putin.

If you put that £500 a month into an S&P 500 ISA instead of a rented German car, you'd be a millionaire by retirement. Stop blaming the Prime Minister for your own terrible capital allocation. Your car isn't an asset. It's an anchor.

I encourage all journalists to focus on Hungary today. I get that the whole Iran debacle is still news, and Trump is working hard today to just talk his way out of all of his losses.... but the big story, the huge story, is Orban getting thrown out. Trumps best buddy in europe, fellow Putin stooge. Gone. There are so many geopolitical ramifications to it....please cover it. I guarantee you that Putin is pissed, Trump is pissed, and Ukraine is cheering. If you figure out that paradigm, you now know why this is a huge huge geopolitical event.

This enormous anti-Orbán crowd isn't just rejecting him; they're saying f*ck you to Putin, trump, JD Vance, and every other fascist jackass trying to prop him up. Godspeed, Hungary. May you SOUNDLY defeat Orbán.
